The Ultimate Tutorial: How to Make Quilt Binding from a Fat Quarter

Creating quilt bindings from a fat quarter is a smart and efficient way to finish your quilts without sacrificing precious fabric space. This method is perfect for quilters looking to use a beloved accent fabric sparingly, knowing that a single quarter-yard cut is often enough to bind a standard-sized quilt. The process transforms a small, manageable piece of fabric into the final, polished edge that protects your stitching and elevates your entire project.

Calculating Your Fat Quarter Binding Needs

Before you snip a single thread, understanding the math ensures you grab the right fat quarter for the job. Quilts are typically bound with double-fold binding, which consumes approximately 1/4 yard of fabric for a standard queen or king-sized quilt. Since a fat quarter measures 18 inches by 22 inches, you effectively have 40 inches of usable length if you cut the fabric correctly. This is usually more than enough for most projects, but measuring your quilt’s perimeter is always the best first step to confirm you have sufficient material.

Preparing the Fat Quarter

Pressing and Layout

Start by gently pressing your fat quarter to remove any creases from shipping or storage. Avoid ironing with excessive steam, which can cause the fabric to warp. Lay the fat quarter flat on your cutting surface with the printed or patterned side facing down. You will notice one side that is 22 inches and another that is 18 inches; align the fabric so the longest edges are horizontal, providing the longest possible strip to cut from the bias.

Cutting the Binding Strips

Width and Technique

To achieve professional-looking binding that drapes nicely around the quilt’s corners, cut your strips on the bias. Fold the fat quarter diagonally to form a triangle, or align your ruler at a 45-degree angle to the selvage edge. For most quilts, a strip width of 2 inches is ideal, as it results in a 1/4-inch finished binding that is generous and durable. Cut the strips continuously, maintaining a consistent width, to create one long piece of fabric.

Joining the Strips

Creating Continuous Length

If your quilt requires more length than a single strip from the fat quarter provides, you will need to join pieces. Take two strips and place them perpendicular to each other, right sides together, to form an L-shape. Sew a straight line across the corner, connecting the two pieces at an exact 45-degree angle. This technique eliminates excess bulk at the intersection and creates a smooth, flat seam, ensuring the binding lies flat when pressed open.

Pressing the Binding

Forming the Double Fold

Once you have your long strip, the key to easy application is the press. Fold the strip in lengthwise with the wrong sides together and press it open. Then, fold the raw edges inward so they meet in the center crease, and press again. Finally, fold the binding in half one more time to hide the raw edges, creating a perfect double-fold ready for attachment. This step sets the crease, making the binding behave like ribbon when you sew it onto the quilt edge.

Sewing and Finishing

To attach, align the folded edge of the binding with the raw edge of the quilt, pinning or clipping it in place. Sew a straight line 1/4 inch from the edge, leaving a 10-inch tail for later joining. Miter the corners by folding the binding back at a 45-degree angle when you reach the edge, then down again, and continue sewing. When you return to your starting point, trim the excess tail, overlap the new end, and hand-sew the invisible join. Roll the binding to the back of the quilt and slip-stitch it closed for a flawless, hand-finished appearance that showcases your craftsmanship.
