With an IMDb rating of 8.3/10, based on over 100,000 user reviews, it's clear that this film has resonated with audiences worldwide. But what makes this documentary so captivating, and why has it left such a lasting impression on IMDb users?
Understanding the IMDb Rating System
Before delving into the reasons behind The Fog of War's high IMDb rating, it's essential to understand the IMDb rating system. IMDb uses a weighted rating system, similar to that of Netflix, which takes into account the number of votes a title has received. This ensures that more popular titles, with a larger number of votes, have a more significant impact on their overall rating. The Fog of War's high rating, therefore, is a testament to its widespread appeal and impact on viewers.
The Fog of War: A Unique Perspective on War and Politics
One of the primary reasons for The Fog of War's high IMDb rating is its unique perspective on war and politics. The documentary challenges traditional narratives and offers a critical examination of the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and other significant historical events. Through McNamara's candid interviews, viewers gain unprecedented insight into the decision-making processes of high-ranking officials and the human consequences of political actions.
Morris's innovative use of archival footage and animated reenactments also contributes to the film's impact. These visual elements help to illustrate McNamara's accounts and bring history to life, making complex political and military concepts more accessible to viewers. This multimedia approach has been praised by IMDb users, with many citing it as a key factor in their enjoyment of the film.
Errol Morris's Masterful Direction
Errol Morris is a renowned documentary filmmaker, known for his innovative use of the interview format and his ability to draw out compelling narratives from his subjects. In The Fog of War, Morris employs his signature "Interrotron" technique, which allows McNamara to maintain eye contact with the camera (and thus, the viewer) throughout the interview. This technique creates a sense of intimacy and immediacy, drawing viewers in and making them feel like active participants in the conversation.
Morris's skillful editing and structuring of the material also contribute to the film's impact. He organizes the documentary around McNamara's "11 lessons" on war, using this framework to explore broader themes and connect seemingly disparate historical events. This structure gives the film a sense of cohesion and purpose, making it more engaging and thought-provoking for viewers.

The Fog of War's high IMDb rating is a testament to its enduring impact on viewers. The film has been praised for its ability to challenge conventional wisdom, provoke thought, and inspire discussion. Many IMDb users have cited the film's "lessons" as a particular point of interest, with some noting that they have revisited the film multiple times to better understand and absorb its messages.
