In this playful and perplexing book, we meet a young Parisian researcher who lives inside his bathroom. As he sits in his tub meditating on existence (and refusing to tell us his name), the people around him―his girlfriend, Edmondsson.

The Bathroom is the first of Jean-Philippe Toussaint's novels, but it already bears many of the hallmarks of his later work, specifically a disaffected male narrator, not entirely passive but pretty much just going with the flow, travelling (fairly aimlessly) abroad, in a narrative that meanders through the mundane.

Full of weird feelings and anticipation. Before I read this, I'd heard this book described as a story about a guy who doesn't or can't leave his bathroom.
