In this playful and perplexing book, we meet a young Parisian researcher who lives inside his bathroom. The Bathroom is the first of Jean-Philippe Toussaint's novels, but it already bears many of the hallmarks of his later work, specifically a disaffected male narrator, not entirely passive but pretty much just going with the flow, travelling (fairly aimlessly) abroad, in a narrative that meanders through the mundane.

Full of weird feelings and anticipation. Before I read this, I'd heard this book described as a story about a guy who doesn't or can't leave his bathroom. The Bathroom by Jean-Philippe Toussaint In this introspective and minimalist narrative, the protagonist, a young man living in Paris, becomes increasingly obsessed with the idea of remaining in his bathroom, viewing it as a sanctuary from the chaos of the outside world.
