In the competitive landscape of performance engines, the e92 m3 and g87 m2 stand out as powerful contenders in the world of high-revving inline-six powerplants. The e92 m3, derived from BMW’s legendary S54-series engine, delivers exceptional throttle response and a raw, driver-focused driving experience, favored by enthusiasts for its precision and high-rev capability. In contrast, the g87 m2—an evolution of the M3’s powertrain—offers refined refinement, improved reliability, and slightly lower peak RPMs, balancing performance with everyday usability. While the e92 m3 excels in raw power and enthusiast engagement, the g87 m2 delivers smoother operation and enhanced drivability, appealing to those who value both performance and comfort. Key specs reveal the e92 m3 generates up to 414 hp with manual tuning, while the g87 m2 typically outputs 386 hp but with superior low-end torque and a more balanced powerband. Both engines feature advanced fuel injection, variable valve timing, and robust build quality, though the g87 m2 integrates modern thermal management for reduced wear. When choosing between e92 m3 and g87 m2, consider whether you prioritize pure driving dynamics or a blend of performance and practicality. For the ultimate performance experience, the e92 m3 remains unmatched; for refined power delivery, the g87 m2 sets a new benchmark. Make your decision based on your lifestyle and driving passion—each engine delivers excellence in its own right.
Ultimately, the e92 m3 and G87 M2 represent distinct philosophies in high-performance engineering—raw thrill versus refined execution. Choose the e92 m3 for uncompromising driving passion and track-ready dynamics, or opt for the g87 m2 if you seek a powerful, reliable engine that excels both on the road and under the hood. For gearheads and drivers alike, understanding these differences ensures a choice aligned with your performance goals.

Tl:dr: Has anybody gone from an F87 to G87 or even back to an E92 (or vice versa, or any other order?) I have been wanting to create this post for around 3 months but only got round to it. Please bear with me and tell me if I'm being mad. Bought my F87 M2C last July, it is no doubt the best.
Compare performance of BMW M3 (E92) and BMW M2 (F87). Updated November 2025. F87 M2C vs G87 M2 vs E92 M3 Recently, I have been having the urge to step into a G87 M2.
I sat in a friends G82 M4 and was blown away by the S58. Plus I have been given a G80 M3 as a courtesy car by BMW on 2 occasions (I'm sure they do this on purpose!) so have experienced some seat time in one. I love the proportions of my current F87 so it would definitely have to be a G87 rather than G80/2.
I am all for the e92, BUT as a daily I would suggest the M2 Newer car with less issues, better mpg, and think about the tech in a new car vs a 10 y/o car. Bluetooth will work a lot better, Nav, etc. I'd go the m2 route and save up to possibly get an e92 in the future if you still want it.
The new BMW G87 M2 is based on the M3 and M4, though it's down on power. Does it offer the same driving experience (or better?). « Previous Thread Next Thread F87 M2C vs G87 M2 vs E92 M3.
