Carcassonne Safari: A Comprehensive Guide to the Game's Rules

Embarking on a safari through the enchanting world of Carcassonne, the award-winning tile-laying game, requires a solid understanding of its rules. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the game's setup, gameplay, and scoring, ensuring you're well-prepared for your next adventure in this captivating board game.

Game Components
Before diving into the rules, let's familiarize ourselves with the game components:

- 160 Landscape Tiles (including 1 starting tile)
- 40 Follower Meeples (8 of each color)
- 1 Scorepad
- 1 Pencil
Setup

The game's setup is straightforward. Place the starting tile face up on the table. Shuffle the remaining tiles and place them face down in a draw pile. Deal each player a starting hand of 7 tiles. The remaining tiles form the draw pile. The scorepad and pencil are used to track each player's score.
Gameplay
The game proceeds in turns, with each player taking their turn in a fixed order. On your turn, you have three phases to complete:

Phase 1: Draw and Place a Tile
Draw a tile from the top of the draw pile and add it to the table. The tile must be placed adjacent to at least one other tile, either orthogonally or diagonally. The tile's edges must match the terrain of the adjacent tile(s).
Phase 2: Place a Follower (Optional)

If you wish, you may place one of your follower meeples on the tile you just placed, or on any tile that shares an edge with it. The meeple's placement determines its role:
- Road: Place the meeple on a road segment to score points for completed roads.
- City: Place the meeple on a city tile to score points for completed cities.
- Field: Place the meeple on a field tile to score points for completed farms.

Phase 3: Score (Optional)
If you've completed a feature (road, city, or farm) with one of your followers, you may score points for it. To do so, remove the follower from the tile and place it back in your supply. Then, consult the scoring rules for that feature:
Scoring Roads
Score 1 point for each tile in the road, plus 1 bonus point if the road connects two cities.
Scoring Cities
Score 2 points for each tile in the city, plus 3 bonus points if the city has a tower (castle).
Scoring Farms
Score 3 points for each tile in the farm, plus 1 point for each tile in adjacent fields that do not form part of another player's farm.
End of the Game
The game ends when all tiles have been placed, and all followers have been placed on tiles. The player with the most points is declared the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the most followers on tiles wins.
Expansions and Variations
Carcassonne offers numerous expansions and variations, such as The Inn, The Tower, and The Trickster, which introduce new rules and gameplay elements. Be sure to consult the specific rules for each expansion when playing.
Now that you're familiar with the rules of Carcassonne, it's time to gather your fellow adventurers and embark on your first safari. Happy gaming!
