Toucan Eye Color

Toucans possess a diverse range of eye colors, each contributing to their overall charm and charisma. The most common eye colors found in these tropical birds include: 1. Brown Eyes: Many toucans, such as the Keel-billed Toucan and the Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, have striking brown eyes that contrast beautifully with their vibrant plumage.

2. Subspecies showcase distinctive eye-ring colors and mandible tones, with the chestnut-mandibled toucan presenting a chestnut mandible, emphasizing the subtle inter-species diversities. The bare eye-patch and bill base are blue, and the throat is white.

Yellow-ridged toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus culminatus): Native to Brazil and Bolivia. The base of its bill is yellow, the skin around the pale blue eye is red, and the entire throat and chest are orange. Ariel toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus ariel): Native to Brazil and Bolivia.

Toco toucans have some of the most beautiful eyes you will ever see. Very expressive and soulful, they connect with you immediately through strong eye contact. What makes them appear so colorful are the two layers of bare, unfeathered skin that surround their actual eye - the first bright blue and around that, tangerine orange.

Habitat: Black-billed Mountain-Toucan can be found in various habitats, including moist cloud forests, subtropical to temperate montane forests, thickets, bogs, cultivated areas adjacent to forests, and open areas with scattered fruit trees. Plumage: the color of their plumage varies greatly between the different types of toucans that exist, although black, green, blue, white and yellow colors usually dominate. In 2014, in an effort to replicate this natural environment, a male toucan joined the Zoo's female toucan. The toco toucan has a striking plumage with a mainly black body, a white throat, chest and uppertail-coverts, and red undertail-coverts. What appears to be a blue iris is actually thin blue skin around the eye.

This blue skin is surrounded by another ring of bare, orange skin. The most noticeable feature, however, is its huge bill, which is yellow-orange, tending to deeper reddish.
