Tried a big olive wood tray/bowl, something like this and it didn't work in my interior. It could work in yours depending on other decor in the room and style, if it's leaning toward boho, natural, or farmhouse. Tried a big marble bowl, didn't work either, was too matching to a counter top disappearing on it.

I generally don't like decor with quotes but yours is awesome. I would sacrifice some room in my kitchen to have a small island where my someone could sit and visit with me while I cook/prep. Island design can be a matter of preference entirely and there are many ways around some of the problems addressed, if you absolutely needed to go that direction.

One of them is the kitchen island and I am wondering what are the pros and cons of having an island. And what is the must-have and what to avoid. My initial thought, was that I wanted the stove and a small sink in there, and also to be big enough to have a bar in front of the stove.

If you're looking to spend, I'd re-orient and expand your island so there's counter seating on the side close to your table. It would open up the floor space to maneuver around the kitchen. Some pendant lights above the reoriented island, and a chandelier update would help this all to look more custom and less builder grade.
