The History of the BMW GS-Series It's hard to believe that it's been 30 years since BMW introduced a radical new motorcycle to the public. The original BMW R 80 G/S received a "love it/hate it" reaction from everyone who laid eyes on it, and not a single person thought the concept would succeed. But here we are, 30 years later and the GS-series is not only one of BMW's best.

Each success story has a beginning. For the GS, it all began in 1980, when BMW Motorrad presented the world's first large dual-sport motorcycle in southern France with the R 80 G/S. Since then, the manufacturer has been setting the benchmark in this segment.

And has constantly been writing success stories. German motorcycle manufacturer BMW Motorrad will reach a milestone with one of its iconic model lines this autumn with its GS model becoming 40 years old. BMW said that the effective date for incorporation of the 17 character VIN was the model year change during 09/01/1980 to 01/02/1981.

September 1st (or, nearest work day after) is the day the Factory re-opens after the month-long vacation period (aka Holiday period). I have found all this to be typically true, but there are some anomalies. The AMA BMW R75GS was crafted by Analog Motorcycles with the express purpose of making an off-road ready airhead.

Enter to win this bike! As early as 1970 Herbert Schek won the German enduro championship aboard a bike based on a BMW boxer. In 1975, BMW engineer Rudiger Gutsche built a similar machine to great success.

In 2017 BMW Motorrad continued to write GS history with the completely redesigned F 750 GS and F 850 GS enduro models. BMW Motorrad consistently built on typical GS strengths in the successor models to the successful two-cylinder F 650 GS, F 700 GS and F 800 GS motorcycles with the aim of making good things even better.
