The Desmodromic Advantage in the BMW R1 Desmos

At the core of the R1 Desmos lies BMW’s proprietary desmodromic valve system, which mechanically closes the valves instead of relying on springs. This eliminates valve float at high RPMs, enabling sharper throttle response, increased engine durability, and consistent power delivery across the rev range—key for racing-derived performance.

Precision Engineering Meets Racing DNA

Building on BMW’s motorsport heritage, the R1 Desmos integrates lightweight materials, refined aerodynamics, and a compact, high-revving inline-four engine. The desmodromic system ensures minimal maintenance and peak efficiency, making it ideal for both track enthusiasts and daily riders seeking precision handling and raw power.

So BMW's cylinder head expert Georg Emmersberger was directed to develop a four-valve desmo cylinder head design for the R1, with its pairs of titanium valves (38mm inlets and 33mm exhausts) set at a very flat included angle of barely 20 degrees. In the late '80, BMW Motorrad started to think about challenge in the recently founded World Superbike Championship. This is BMW's own R1.

A project actually never realised on production. It had an aluminum twinspar frame, and used the tele/para-lever suspension systems. The engine was a 1000cc flat twin, watercooled too, and with DOHC on each side.

It used a desmo system on the valvetrain. It was caught testing, but it really never got a 2nd thought to get into production. Photos and details courtesy.

Mercedes-Benz used a related system on its W-196 GP car of 1954 to overcome problems with valve spring breakage. Ducati has continued to this day with desmo valves, despite the development of satisfactory valve springs. Why bother with desmodromics?
