How to Cut a Cactus Pear: Easy, Safe Kitchen Prep

Handling a cactus pear requires respect for its formidable defenses. This fruit, also known as prickly pear, comes equipped with sharp spines and a resilient skin that can challenge the unprepared. To enjoy its sweet, refreshing pulp, you must approach the preparation with a methodical and safe technique. The goal is to remove the hazardous outer layer without wasting the valuable fruit inside.

Before you begin, it is essential to prepare your workspace and gather the right tools. You will need a sturdy cutting board, a sharp paring knife, and a pair of thick kitchen tongs or gloves. A paper towel or clean cloth can be handy for gripping the slippery pear. Having a bowl of water nearby is also recommended to catch any stray spines and keep the fruit moist during the process.

Step One: Securing the Fruit

Start by laying the cactus pear flat on your cutting board. Use your tongs or gloved hand to hold the fruit steady. It is crucial to ensure the pear is stable and will not roll away, as this minimizes the risk of slipping and injury. Never attempt to hold the fruit with your bare fingers while cutting, as the spines can easily penetrate skin.

Removing the Spines

While some varieties of cactus pear are sold de-spined, it is always wise to verify.
