How to Install Vinyl Plank Over Tile: Step-by-Step Guide

Installing vinyl plank flooring over existing tile is a smart, cost-effective way to refresh the look of your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room without the mess and expense of a full demolition. This method saves you the labor and disposal fees associated with removing old tile, while providing a waterproof, durable surface that is easy to clean. When executed correctly, it creates a smooth, level surface that performs just as well as if it were installed in a traditional wood subfloor.

However, success hinges on meticulous preparation and the right materials. Tile surfaces are rigid and unforgiving, meaning any imperfections, moisture, or unevenness will telegraph through the new vinyl layer. You cannot simply roll out planks over cracked or loose grout. By following a systematic approach—focusing on substrate integrity, moisture management, and precise installation—you can achieve a professional finish that lasts for years.

Assessing Your Existing Tile

Before purchasing a single plank, you must evaluate the condition of your current flooring. The tile substrate must be structurally sound, clean, and completely dry. Look for any signs of cracking, chipping, or hollow spots where the tile might be loose. Tap the surface with a rubber mallet; a hollow sound indicates a problem beneath the glaze, often due to thinset failure or moisture trapped under the tile.

It is also critical to check the levelness of the surface. Use a long straightedge or a level tool to span across the tiles. If the gap between the straightedge and the tile exceeds 1/8 inch over a 10-foot span, you will need to address the high spots or fill the low spots. Uneven tile will cause the vinyl plank to bridge over the bumps, leading to premature wear and potential seam separation.

Cleanliness and Contaminants

Grout lines create texture and lip, which can prevent proper adhesion. You need to ensure the floor is free of any residues from previous sealers, waxes, or cleaners. Sweep and mop the floor thoroughly, then consider using a degreaser or a tile cleaner designed for vinyl installation. Any remaining film will block the adhesive from bonding to the tile, leading to peeling.

Moisture Management: The Most Critical Factor

Tile is porous, but the thinset and grout used to set it are not. More importantly, moisture can be trapped beneath the tile, originating from the concrete slab below or from leaks in the waterproofing layer. If you are installing over a slab on grade, you absolutely must verify that the moisture content is within acceptable limits before proceeding. High moisture levels will warp the vinyl planks, cause the adhesive to fail, or lead to mold growth underneath the floor.

To test for moisture, place a 16x16 inch square of plastic sheeting on the floor and tape the edges tightly. Wait 24 hours. If condensation forms underneath, or if the concrete is damp to the touch, you have a moisture problem. In this scenario, you must install a moisture barrier or a cement board underlayment before laying the vinyl. For above-grade floors where moisture is less of a concern, a quality self-leveling underlayment often provides sufficient protection.

Required Tools and Materials

You cannot successfully install vinyl plank over tile using the same tools as a standard room installation. You need products specifically designed to bridge rigid surfaces and fill gaps.

The Installation Process

Once the tile is deemed suitable, you can begin the installation process. Start by installing the underlayment. If you are using a plywood or fiber underlayment, ensure it is fastened with narrow-gauge staples or screws every 6 inches. If you are applying a leveling compound, mix it according to the manufacturer’s instructions and pour it over the entire surface. Use a notched trowel to spread it evenly, filling in the grout lines. You are aiming for a floor that has no visible gaps or transitions between the old tile and the new surface.

Allow the underlayment or filler to dry and cure completely. This can take 24 to 72 hours depending on the product and environmental conditions. Rushing this step is one of the most common mistakes; installing vinyl over a damp underlayment traps moisture and guarantees failure. Once the surface is dry and solid, you are ready to map your layout. Starting from the center of the room rather than the wall helps ensure balanced seams at the edges, especially if the tile below is not perfectly square.

Bonding the Planks

Apply the adhesive to the prepared tile surface using a fine-notched trowel. Work in small sections to prevent the adhesive from skinning over before you lay the plank. Press the first plank firmly into the adhesive, ensuring it makes full contact with the tile below. Use a pull bar and a mallet to tap the planks tightly together. The goal is to create a floor that behaves as a single sheet, with no movement between planks. Once the floor is laid, allow the adhesive to cure fully before applying any furniture or walking on the surface.

Finally, transition to the baseboards. Because the vinyl plank is now slightly thicker than the original tile, you will likely need to remove a small section of the bottom of the baseboard to allow it to sit flush. Use a chisel or a utility knife to score the back of the trim. Reinstall the baseboards to cover the expansion gap, and the installation is complete. With the floor secured and the transitions clean, the space is ready for immediate use.
