If you currently have sheet vinyl installed, you might be wondering if it is feasible to install vinyl plank over it. The short answer is yes, but success hinges on a meticulous evaluation of the existing surface and a precise execution plan.

Unlike rigid flooring options, vinyl plank is inherently flexible, which allows it to conform to the slight imperfections of a flat, sealed substrate. Sheet vinyl, being a single large sheet, provides a seamless barrier that, when properly prepared, offers an ideal foundation for layering new plank flooring on top. This renovation strategy effectively conceals worn patterns or discoloration while delivering the modern aesthetic of contemporary wood-look planks without the associated labor and cost of removal.

Assessing the Condition of Your Existing Sheet Vinyl

The critical factor determining the success of this project is the condition of the current sheet vinyl. You are essentially bonding a new layer on top, so the old surface must be clean, dry, stable, and rigid. Any soft spots, tears, or areas of delamination will telegraph through the new planks, leading to bumps, cracks, or premature failure of the installation.

Walk the room and listen for any suspicious sounds, such as a hollow ring when you tap the floor. This indicates that the sheet vinyl has separated from the subfloor, which is a major red flag. You also need to test the integrity of the vinyl surface by placing a few drops of water on the floor. If the water beads up and does not absorb, the surface is sealed and suitable for adhesion; however, if the vinyl absorbs the water or feels brittle, the material may be deteriorating and is not a suitable base.

Even if the sheet vinyl feels secure, you must thoroughly clean the entire area to ensure maximum adhesion. Sweep and vacuum the floor to remove all dust and debris, then wash the surface with a degreaser or a mixture of water and TSP (trisodium phosphate) to eliminate any residual oils or waxes that might prevent the glue from bonding.

Once clean, you must address the seam where two sheets of vinyl meet. These seams, which are usually glued together, create a ridge that can cause the new plank to telegraph or create a weak point. It is recommended to grind down the high edge of the seam or fill it with a flexible, acetone-compatible seam sealer to create a uniform, level transition. Skipping this step will almost certainly result in an uneven finish at the seam.

Selecting the Right Adhesive and Plank

Always verify that the adhesive is compatible with both the new vinyl plank and the old sheet vinyl to prevent any chemical reactions that might cause yellowing or degradation.

Installation Mechanics: The Art of the Lay

The installation process mimics that of a standard loose-lay vinyl plank project, with a slight modification regarding the perimeter. Begin by laying rows of planks in the center of the room, working your way outward to ensure the final cuts at the edges are the most precise. Because you are gluing the planks, you do not need to leave the typical expansion gap against the walls immediately, but you must still account for movement. Cut the planks to fit tightly against the baseboards, allowing a small gap that will later be covered by a quarter round or shoe molding to contain the expansion gap.

Apply the adhesive to the sheet vinyl in small sections using a notched trowel to ensure even coverage. Carefully lay the plank into the adhesive, aligning it with your starting grid. Use a J-roller to press the plank firmly into the adhesive, releasing any trapped air bubbles from the center out to the edges. Work methodically, ensuring each plank is fully seated before moving on to the next, to create a solid, uniform surface that feels just as stable as a standard installation.
