43 Frameless Backpack

Kindle sleeve

I designed once a very nice Kindle sleeve, with an idea to start producing it, but sewing the pocket and the top with folded edges appeared to be a nightmare (1 cm fold on a thick material was tricky to hold and position). Maybe it will inspire somebody else 🪡

First ever sewing project: prototype for 25l alpine running pack

IKEA crampon bag for the footfangs

Snow smock - first proper project

I barely know how to use a sewing machine so this was maybe a but ambitious- traditional Scandinavian style snow smock for extreme winter use - made very roomy to allow for all thenlayers that are needed in -30c (-22f) and below!

Need to add the ruff, velcro and remove loose threads but put this together other the weekend and very happy with the end result!

Lots of transferable skills and can see an attempt at a wool hoody or similar in the near future!

Two Prototype Comp. backpacks made using Challenge fabrics

Handlebar bag!

Been working on streamlining this design! I added Velcro on the inside liner to be able to insert a HDPE sheet to keep its shape and wooden dowel for stability. Design includes straps on the side for attaching smaller bags. Used cordura for the exterior.

Christmas gifts

Finally got the measurements right

Shoulderstrab for my next backpack tried some more simple design with only a minimalistic daisichain for the sternum strab or other accessories. Inside is 2x 4mm Evazote (one piece is shorter to fill only the shoulder and a little bit of the chest region). Made from ultra200 and 500den Cordura.

Bicycle Top Tube Bag

First try at multicolor side panels, as well as sew on logos. Pretty happy with how it turned out. Forgot the Velcro the first time around, but we recovered nicely 😂

Made my own merino wool baselayer set for hiking and skiing!

I have been dreaming of sewing my own technical baselayer set for years in some nice merino wool fabric I have been saving up. The vision finally came to life using my Road Trip Pattern Co - Basecamp Set pattern. Can't wait to take these on the ski slopes! I have already worn them hiking and they dry so fast while keeping me warm and comfortable. The armhole gussets make a big difference in mobility vs. regular t-shirts. Here are the deets:

  • Crew neck top with armhole gussets: made in a VERY stretchy slinky tencel/merino/spandex rib knit, 200 gsm
  • Leggings: Polartec Power Wool midweight fleece, 230 gsm, 4 way stretch

Fit notes: I am 5'4" and currently measure 40/33/41"

  • Size Medium top since it was so stretchy, even though I measure a Large. This fabric a nice content blend and very soft but it is way too unruly to enjoy sewing something complicated. Would prefer using a single jersey knit next time.
  • Size Large legging, fits perfect and this fabric is super warm and thick! I love the 4-way stretch which works great for this use. Going to try a wool/3% spandex jersey next for a lightweight version.

Overall I wish there were more merino wool fabric options, especially with spandex, on the market for home sewists. I even work in the fashion industry and am so surprised by the limited selection in this category! Anyway, happy to help answer questions about sizing or fabric!

New table for project room

This is a table I made. I laminated maple and padauk. Sanded to 800 grit. Finished with paste wax and buffed. I mounted it to a $100 adjustable desk frame from Amazon.

I made the top more than 10 years ago. It was intended to be a countertop. We moved before I got around to installing it. It's been hiding in the back of my shop. This seemed like the perfect use for it.

I made myself a titanium long spoon

I was jealous of my buddys freeze dried food free knuckles and titanium long spoon last time we went camping so when I was packing up for our thanksgiving trip a couple of weeks ago I decided to get thoroughly side tracked and make myself one from a bit of scrap 1mm titanium I had kicking around. I traced out my favorite spoon, stretched out the handle as long as my piece of metal let me and 20 minutes of hammering later i had a new spoon.

A few recent 50F Apex quilts / Winter Overbags

New Panel Loader

A new bag I've been rocking for the last week. A bit bigger than the last one I made and with a full panel loading front zipper. X-Pac RX30 (cuz recycling matters!), YKK #8 zipper, and a splash of red 1" webs for compression and handles.

I definitely took influence from the MR Blitz 30 but with a lot less outer pockets. I found it funny that MR released their Dragon 2.0, another panel loader, at the same time I was finishing this.

Question for whoever wants it: When making shoulder pads, what is a good way to have the foam fit more snuggly in the fabric? Is there a good way to calculate the difference in pattern shapes between the two pieces? TIA

Fanny Pack V2

Couple of tote bags I've made

Quick little fanny packs for my nieces

Haven't myog'd in a while. My nieces were eyeing up a bag I made during my last visit down south. Figured I'd surprise them at Thanksgiving with some fanny packs.

My nephew has trouble keeping his hot wheels together so I made him a pack with his favorite cartoon and some luxury accents.

Used the simple series shoulder bag from Rip Stop by the Roll and scaled it to 70 or 80% I can’t remember. I added some D rings and a handle.

Backcountry overnight ski packs

Last winter i started making ski/multi day packs. I added some fun features like a big front pocket to store my shovel and probe with ease, and front attachments for ice tools. For these packs I also added webbing on the side for A-framing your skis while boot packing. I made a removable hipbelt for larger loads and a bottom pocket for storing ski skins!

They are all made with different color schemes in mind but for the most part i used Gridstop and Xpac for the roll tops and main bodies, and my favorite, Venom Mesh, for the pockets! They are all around 50L.

I’m excited to start creating more this upcoming season!!

An array of packs and bags I made this summer

Learn MYOG UL windshell with alpha liner

First attempt at a jacket

I wanted an alternative to light weight down puffers for spring / autumn since I feel that the lack of breath ability easily makes them feel clammy in mild weather (5-10 degrees Celsius).

So far this jacket performs and feels great in that temperature range.

It was relatively easy to line the jacket (pattern is unlined). I basically made a jacket in the liner material from the large jacket pieces but left the seams on the outside rather than inside.

When both ‘jackets’ were sewn I joined them inside out via the zipper the same way you would do with the liner for a backpack and then turned it right sides out.

The pattern includes folded hems at the hood, cuffs and waist which I topstitched over the liner. The liner was a bit long in arms and waist but I simply trimmed it to size when I was going to stitch it.

I used flat elastic in cuffs and waist.

Pattern: https://learnmyog.com/windshell.html

Great and clear instructions as always.

Shell fabric: https://www.extremtextil.de/ripstop-nylon-supersoft-active-kiss-coating-20den-44g-qm.html?number=72267.ARTSCH

Very soft and breathable wind breaker shell.

Liner: https://www.extremtextil.de/alpha-isolation-mit-wolle-153g-qm-mm.html

Went with the wool version since I really like the regulating and odor properties of wool in general. So far provides good insulation for the weight.

Custom pattern rain jacket

Made my first pack

After year(s) of dreaming, I made myself a pack! Heavily inspired by running vests and fastpacking gear, I wanted to create a pack for summiting and faster dayhikes.

Features: Roll-top closure, 15l capacity, vest-style straps with pockets for phone, water, snacks. Daisy chaining on the back for poles/ice axe, and inside a sitpad pocket for comfort on the move, but also for breaks and emergencies.

Generally im super satisfied with the pack, and it feels very good with intended 3-4,5kg loads! Fabric choice was bit off (2L, was on sale) since it doesn’t feel like it will last years, so definitely choosing something burlier next time. Also some design flaws that made it impossible to seal all the seams but it’ll do!

Couldn’t have done it without this sub!

From a duffle with love...

Listen...you should find a way to obtain the bag you truly desire. For me, it was a ranger green and coyote brown Porter 45 Duffle. The first one I made of these was in 1000D olive cordura (from ripstopbytheroll) but I REALLY wanted rg instead. Fast forward a few months and I got the colors I wanted and modified the pattern for some extra zipper pocket storage. 500D cordura (rockywoodsfabrics) makes fashioning the bag a bit easier but, if you want your panels to be damn near perfect, you're gonna have to put in the work. Homemade zipper pulls have been serving me well these days paired with goon tape. Lined with 300D pack material (from dutchware_gear), I couldn't ask for a better built pack. It's pictured with large and medium packing cubes (pricklygorse) which fit perfectly in this pack. I took a 45 with these packing cubes for a weeklong trip and it was everything I needed.

Climbing chalk bag from old mountain trousers

An anorak for fall. I couldn’t decide which colour to order, so I mixed them. I used Merchant & Mills dry oilskin. Fun project!

Bicycle tool roll

It holds the essentials for fixing a flat, plus my S&S wrench, allen keys, chain breaker, etc etc, in the zippered pouch. Don't look too closely at the perimeter stitching, haha.

Finished my first MYOG project. Porter Pony

Built the porter pony definitely was an ambitious first project. I learned to sew as a kid but haven’t sewed in at least 10 years. The pattern was great highly recommended watching the YouTube video as you sew. I also used patternprintingco.com, they were awesome reasonably priced I feel and quick had my print in less than 4 days. I ordered all the materials from rockywoods.com awesome website and quick turnaround.

Materials used: Shell 1000d Cordura Lining 200d pack cloth

5 YKK zips

10 YKK zip for the main opening

Gutermann TERA 80 An old bison designs belt for the top handle Neoprene Sponge Foam Rubber (one thing I would change)

Modifications to the pattern: I added a water bottle pocket specifically fitted for my favorite yeti bottle. I added a little bit to the pleat that the pattern called for and it worked perfectly. I simplified the back so that I could cleanly add a luggage handle pass through. I also changed the laptop sleeve I flattened it out (I only ever travel with an iPad Pro) and added a pocket modeled after what topo designs dose with their laptop sleeve. I permanently attached the straps as I have never liked removable straps.

I sewed the whole project on my singer heavy duty 4452 I bought to start this journey, it was a champ other than a presser foot issue (user error see previous post on this sub). I was nervous about the 1000d fabric, definitely don’t think it could handle much more. I have a little over 12 hours at the machine on this one bag, I definitely took my time and I hope it shows.

Looking forward to the next project!!

Hand sewed a vestibule floor for my tent.

I was sent the wrong footprint ( nemo hornet 2 )for my nemo kunai tent and told to keep it. So i made a matching vestibule floor to match my tents footprint. This upgrade keeps my gear cleaner and makes getting in and out of the tent far easier. I only hand sew as i very much enjoy the projects.

Apex 67g Project finished

I posted the jacket and trousers a few weeks back. This was my first sewing project and I've winged it but super happy to get very usable kit out of it. I've made booties from scraps from the rest of the sewing. I've extended the cuffs and trousers legs too for more coverage and comfort.

I've embraced the very handmade feel of this by doing all changes and repairs in a neon multicoloured thread. It's imperfect, and that's fine by me :)

The jacket, trousers and booties weigh 496g All 10d taffeta Outer and 10d(jacket) 7d (trousers) ripstop inner

DIY salsa anything fork cages

Love the idea of salsa anything fork cages. But I don't have 3 holes for bolts on my forks, and I don't have £38 per side to fork (lol) out. I do, however, have a local Toolstation, £10 of guttering, a drill, cable ties, and elastic. Behold: my poor man's salsa anything cages. Bonus pic of me bringing 3m of guttering home

Durable sleep system V3

Wrapped up my third version of a sleeping system for use this fall and winter. The bag is my take on a quilt/bivy concept.

The sleeping pad is contained within the system so I don’t have any issues with rolling off or sliding around and the bottom material wraps around the pad to keep it snug and hold a pillow in place.

The top portion has a sewn in footbox to maximize warmth and the top 48 inches features zippers on both sides that expose the wings of the quilt so it can be used more so like a blanket while keeping the sleeping pad protected still. My main use case is late fall/winter backpacking and extended hunting trips. With that in mind durability and comfort were slightly more important than weight. I use a floorless tarp setup and have incorporated the waterproof and durable bottom to act as my floor for the sleep system.

The bottom material is hyperD 300, the quilt portion is 1.8 oz airwave and the insulation is 7.5 oz climashield apex.

Bag weight is 3lbs 4 oz and the total sleep system with my pad and pillow is 4lb 13oz. An added benefit is it all rolls up in one piece and the durable bottom is all that is exposed offering as good of weather protection as a separate bag would.

There is a Velcro strip across the knee area that will be utilized for the bug net attachment that I have planed for the future.

I will be on a 6 day solo trip in a few days and will update this post with any feedback once I am back.

Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated!

I've got a new machine! First item sewn on it!

The machine is an absolute blast to work with (have been working through up to 10 Layers of 500D coated Cordura), although it was a nightmare to begin with- a beginner and an industrial machine aren't the best combination.🥲

Anyways, I've made another little pouch, as I wasn't exactly sure about the measurements anymore, and guess what? They were off.

I've fixed the measurements, and while I was at it, decided to experiment a little with this one: I've changed the flaps such that they are now up-to the zipper's teeth, instead of on-to them, added self-made "Webbing", stitched a cross into the Velcro, and added Cordura panels on the inside to hide the seams and make it look more finished as a whole.

I really like the changes, and I think I'll keep them!

The seams - at least the long-ones connecting the individual panels together - aren't exactly how I'd like them yet, but that's more of an skill-issue then anything else, and besides: it's a tricky pouch to assemble, at least for me and the size it's currently at (small pouch, stiff corners, not very easy to put flat, not very much space for the foot).

Anyways, I've dialed-in the measurements, used some leftover materials, experimented s bit and am left with a pretty neat and useable pouch, I'm happy. 😁

First Post! Tote bag from recycled sails for a birthday present.

Made my own gear maker.

I've had this idea in my head for a while. Many projects were ahead of this that needed done first. I picked up this green singer for a few bucks minus its original base. Bought a 450watt servo and built a Teak base and foot pedal. I think I have around 120 bucks in this project and this weekend to do it. It came out great, but pretty heavy for a mobile repair unit.
