@bikejerks Stack it to the moon 🌙 One of the best things about making and selling bike stuff is being able solve nagging problems you are experiencing. As a vintage bike enthusiast, 1” threaded headsets have always been a thorn. My go-to has been a King 2Nut. But used prices for those are now north of $200. I won’t invest in Gripnuts because you cannot use a cable hanger or a spacer stack with them. And if I’m paying $200+ for a headset it’s an investment and I want to be able to use it on multiple bikes over the years without cutting steerers to fit only that headset. The options for any new 1” threaded headset has gotten mighty thin if you want sealed bearing the last decade. I realize that they exist, (I’m sure I’ll get a bunch of “whatabout” comments) but I can’t say the ones I’m aware of do much to quicken the pulse or look correct in a high end build of a new or vintage frame to my eyes. Which is why I’m super proud of @wilde.bikes for willing these Cane Creek gems into production for the price of $120. I think they look really nice and offer an exceptional value. Sometimes I feel like we’re making a real contribution to the options available, and that pleases me.

@bikejerks ⚡️Shimano XTR M900⚡️ My absolute favorite vintage bicycle crank. These are from the period in which Shimano was proving itself to be the masters of forged bicycle parts. Combining beauty, performance, and longevity into components that have aged gracefully and have never been rivaled. IMO. * While some may be prettier (Grafton/Top Line, Cook’s) these have outstanding durability to complement the aesthetics. These were NOS, but as I type this they’re hanging on my @wilde.bikes Sugarfoot still muddy from last weeks ride. *while I adore M950 and appreciate the more industrial / machined look and v-brakes. It’s always just bummed me out regarding what could have been had they continued this more humanist design approach. Luckily on the road they continued the thread into the 10 speed era and gave the world some truly stunning bits of industrial design. @recoverybikeshop Wednesday at 5:00 is the big Open House at Edison (cafeteria) to see what MNDoT is cooking up for Central Ave. Meet at Recovery Bike Shop at 4:30 and we’ll ride over together (it’s five blocks). This is a big deal. I wouldn’t say Central controls our lives, but it certainly gets a big say. And it’s just no fun. Most of its 100 or so feet are dedicated to traffic. Thousands of cars (tens of thousands) flow through our neighborhoods from the suburbs to downtown and back again on Central Avenue every day. These cars bring customers and goods and friends and so on. But they also bring speeders and pollution and noise. What if there was a way to have shoppers and deliveries and friends without the car crashes and without the taxes and without the ground shaking traffic (while still having cars)? Central is enormous. We can have so much more than traffic. Join us Wednesday. We’ll talk about how to make Central AMAZING and then go together to the MNDoT Open House to talk with the planners. This route will be about 5 miles one way or 10 miles round trip. The pace will be about 8-10 miles per hour so we can have conversation, and we will stay together. No one will be left behind. @recoverybikeshop The Central Ave redesign could not come soon enough for the two people who were waiting for the bus on Oct 23 on Central Avenue in front of the St Anthony cemetery. Both were badly injured and went to the hospital in an ambulance. The driver was arrested. Please come to the MNDoT Open House at Edison High School cafeteria Wednesday Dec 11, 5-7pm. We need a safer Central with a street designed for slower speeds. Speed limit signs are not good enough. We need a comfortable street that compliments Northeast’s amazing businesses instead of traffic that chases people away. Central Ave is Northeast’s “Main Street” and this redesign is the only chance in our lifetime to get it right. @joyfulridersclub This was a fun one! A few Sundays ago, we latched onto the @wedgelive emergency ride to provide rolling DJ support alongside our buds @deveric and @perennialcycle. Led by John Edwards, Wedge Live is a valued news source for nitty-gritty details on what’s important in local politics, especially community meetings. Wedge Live organizes Minneapolis’ beloved annual cat tour, hosts a podcast interviewing local luminaries, and has lately added slow-paced “emergency” social rides to their programming. Because it’s urgent that we ride together. Eric Moran, our resident DJ and DJ ride program manager, is good friends with John. The two decided it was only natural, especially after recent events, that dancing and music should be added to the mix to give people a little boost. Folks on the ride reported it was much needed after a difficult few weeks. There were many hugs and lots of smiles. It felt good to be bringing music to the city streets with our friends. I know that’s not on everyone’s list of most exciting things, but when you’re in the alternative transportation industry in a car dominated country, new protected bike lanes are a reason to get up early. Coffee (Outside) Sunday 10am where the car rivers of Central and Hennepin converge (at 5th St NE). These bike lanes are at sidewalk level, so we’ll still have to contend with pedestrians, but this was an area that most riders avoided by several blocks. Now there is a much safer option. So exciting! We’ll be sharing some snacks and discussing whether or not being on the sidewalk makes bikes more or less visible to drivers. See you tomorrow! #IBikeNE

@piecycleclub Late last Spring we launched a little spin-off of our casual group rides, the Piecycle Club Race Team. The pitch was this: Do you want to be a part of a race team with close to zero race responsibilities or commitments? Just a little community to share ride ideas, race plans, and questions with? Maybe wear a colorful jersey with croissants and coffee cups on it? We knew we didn’t have the bandwidth to pull off the incredible race-community building work the likes of @stamina.racing.collective , @handupracing, @bonesawcyclingcollective, @versus_raceteam, and many others do, but wanted to offer the very easiest runway to trying racing we could think of. The results have been so fun and inspiring! - @mariahleaann and @mjack96 raised money for MS research on the MS150 ride clad in Piecycle jerseys. - Multiple riders rode @theheywoodride gravel race. - @dhrubywytt and @kajsa.swanson rode in their first cyclocross races. - Matt Klubertanz rode and top ten finished in @wicxseries_pb_trek races across Wisconsin. - @levimills bounced around as a mid pack Cat 4 racer. - @emmalouiseschultz of Versus donned an MPC jersey for the 24 Hours in the Enchanted Forest race in New Mexico (read the blog!) - So many others shared their long rides on Strava and chatted in the group chat We can’t wait to see what 2025 brings!

We’ll meet at Farmstead Park playground at 9:45 AM to get into adorable parade formation, then roll together along Bryant to Trick or Treat. All ages welcome! Mini Pie rides are especially great for the tiniest of riders. They’re VERY short and there will be plenty of time for casual hangs, playground time, and bike loops along Bryant or at the park. Striders, scooters, and stumblers are welcome and able to ride all in their own! We can’t wait to see your costumes! P.S. Bring some baked goods to share for a post-ride hang at the park! Goals: - Develop a strong and actionable Safe Spaces Policy required for all participating organizations. - Support marginalized groups in the cycling community. - Create a public domain website to host information pertaining to cycling events, rides, safe spaces pledge, resource sharing, skill sharing, volunteer/human power sharing, interactive elements, and method of reporting safe spaces violations. - Set up an annual organization structure to fund website/admin costs with sliding scale options. - Establish board of directors, advisory roles and create working or subcommittee groups. - Create a glossary that is monitored and updated frequently. - Develop connections and resource sharing with similar national cycling communities and organizations that share our values. Values: Provide access to absolutely everyone that is interested in pedaling a bicycle, regardless of race, sexual orientation, ability, gender identity, or expression, age, neurotype, class, etc.

We'll explore scenic spots in Minneapolis, share delicious leftovers from our respective gatherings, and have a blast burning a table. The Leftovers Ride is an annual event that celebrates community, silliness, and a bit of low-key debauchery. It started 10 years ago when we stumbled upon a table in the forest and decided to set it on fire. Now, every year, we bring a new table to burn as a symbol of our gratitude and joy. This is the ride that got the Joyful Riders Club started! 🥇Meet at 3:00 p.m. at Fulton Beer's taproom in North Loop 🚲 Ride at 3:30 p.m., following a route of about 6 miles round trip. 🧺🌳 Stop at the Bohemian Flats Park picnic area 🔥 Build a roaring fire and feast on our Turkey Day leftovers. Bring your own food, drinks, utensils, and plates. We'll provide the table (to burn) and the firewood. 🍽️ Ride homeward to Fulton Beer, where every participant gets a free beer, THC beverage, or non-alcoholic drink courtesy of Fulton. This ride is kid- and family-friendly and open to riders of all skills and experience levels. We might shorten the route depending on the weather and the needs of attendees. We ride at a leisurely pace of about 8–10 miles per hour, and we have a sweeper and regroup points to keep everyone together. @bikingwithbaddies I’m very intentional when I create routes. I’m always making sure we’re taken under natures wings and gliding along side a body of water. We connect there, we meditate there, we listen to our hearts there. It’s so beautiful to see Black women connect in nature. Especially by a river because it represents a profound reclamation of space and healing. Historically, we have often been disconnected from natural spaces, particularly in the U.S., due to the legacy of slavery, segregation, and the fear or trauma associated with the land. Rivers in particular, carry deep symbolism. During slavery, rivers and forest were places of survival, resilience, and escape but also of suffering. Today, when we gather by rivers it’s a return to a place that once represented danger and survival that is now transformed into a space of peace, reflection, and empowerment. It holds a deep special place in our hearts. The act of being in nature by a river represents healing, freedom, and connection… not only with the earth but with ourselves and our shared heritage. It doesn’t matter what complexities are in our complexion. Black women are connected from the roots to the drips of water that feeds it. Biking with Baddies is a powerful reminder of how we, who have historically nurtured others, are now reclaiming the right to nurture ourselves in environments that offer serenity and restoration. This connection is a reclaiming of joy… a reimagining of nature as a space of belonging and grounding. It’s a powerful form of self care. I love Biking with Baddies so much. There is truly no other cycling club like it. I offer many different forms of rides. Look forward 2. Lower your seat (so you don’t get bopped in the booty and pushed forward) 3. Level your pedals (you don’t need to pedal on a descent this steep) 4. Choose a smooth line 5. Center your weight above your bottom bracket (not too far forward, not too far backward) 6. Use your legs and arms to absorb any bounces (don’t be stiff! A rigid stance will send you flying.)

@jkreitzer4 Took a little drive around the Midwest in September with @eriksbikeboardski for #megademotour 🤘 We partner with @rockymountainbicycles @ride_bmc and @iamspecialized to bring on trail mountain bike demos to 12 different cities in 6 states over the course of 18 days. A whirlwind of a trip but the stoke was high at every stop and by the end of it we got close to 1000 people on bikes. 2600 miles of driving and all smiles along the way. @genosack Laying tired eyes on the Gitche Gumee 🥲🫠 10 or so days in, 400 or so miles down. At the campground we met a guy with a brand new Crust Evasion built divinely by @comradecycles ❤️‍🔥. We picked blueberries 15 feet from where we slept, down stream of the Tahquamenon falls. Before this land was stolen and colonized, the Ojibwa people used the falls as a hunting and fishing site, while surrounded by the rich old-growth forest. Before the first colonizers came, the Menominee, Dakota, Anishinaabe peoples lived and worked in harmony with this land, harvesting wild rice and berries in the summer/fall, trapping animals and ice fishing in the winters, tapping the trees for maple syrup in the spring. We are so thankful to be able traverse and enjoy the literal fruits of this beautiful land on our bicycles together. @robofet Grand Carver Caravan 2024. This summer, I and the other ambassadors for @behindbarsbicycleshop decided to host a series of classes introducing folks to bikepacking, culminating with a group trip out to Carver Park Reserve. I’m happy to report that we succeeded in our goal of getting some first-time bikepackers out on their first trip, and everything seems to have gone well, despite a few minor challenges. On Friday, I led 30-ish riders from the shop to the campsite, a 27 mile ride. Zach stayed at the rear of the group, and we kept in touch via radio to keep the group together. Lars floated in the middle of the group to provide moral and mechanical support. We arrived at camp late in the day, and many of us enjoyed a quick sunset swim at the beach. Unfortunately, most of Saturday was impacted by torrential rains. Several campers had to move their tents to higher ground to avoid getting flooded. A few opted to move into a large stone shelter. Despite this, spirits remained mostly high. People chatted, made food, and played games. Many folks braved the weather to ride into town to get supplies and experience the local nightlife. I and a couple others went on an impromptu ride through the park. I was very grateful for that large shelter; being stuck in a tent all day would’ve sucked. Sunday dawned and with it came a welcome relief from the rain, but also the threat of extreme heat. Most people decided to leave early to try and beat the heat. The rest of the group left at noon, and were aided by a tailwind, a stiff breeze, and some cloud cover, and so we avoided the worst of the heat, and everyone made it home safe, and (I presume) happy. This was a volunteer effort. The money we charged was only enough to cover campsite costs, food, first aid training, etc. The rest was a labor of love.
