The BMW 3.0 CS was a variant of the BMW New Six Coupe (E9) that was introduced in 1971. The 3.0 CS was introduced alongside its fuel-injected sibling, the 3.0 CSi, with both these cars replacing the 2800 CS. Unlike the CSi, the 3.0 CS featured a carbureted version of the BMW M30 inline six engine used in both cars.

The 3.0 CS traces its history directly back to the four-cylinder 2000 C coupe that debuted in 1965 and shared many of its components with the "New Class" sedans. Featuring B-pillarless hardtop construction and gracefully curved front and rear windscreens, the bodies of the 2000 C (and later CS) were constructed by Karosserie Karmann of Osnabrück before being transported to BMW for final.
