True, but somewhat unrealistic. BMW hybrids run purely on battery when they're put in electric mode. Upon being started they normally switch between the battery and engine just as a Toyota hybrid would.

A family member bought an X3 Plug In Hybrid this year, and they absolutely love it. For them, the electric range is enough for their day-to-day trips, and the electric motor is certainly better than just the petrol engine on its own. The battery does tax away boot space, but the X3 still has plenty of space.
