The Z in Z3 originally stood for Zukunft (German for "future"). The very first BMW assembled in the US was the E36/5, 318i that rolled off the Spartanburg Plant assembly line beginning in October 1994. The Z3 was introduced as a 1996 model year vehicle, shortly after being featured in EON Productions ' 1995 James Bond film, GoldenEye.

In summer 1994 GoldenEye was in preparation, and cars were an important element for its success. After the producers visited BMW's design center in Munich, the decision was made to use the Z3 roadster as James Bond's official car. It was the first German car that Bond drove as his official car.

To add some some star power, BMW partnered with Eon Productions to place the Z3 in the seventeenth James Bond film, "Goldeneye." Bond, played by Pierce Brosnan, briefly drove a blue four-cylinder Z3 before trading it for a plane, and guess what? BMW then embarked upon an unusual, complex and extensive marketing program to introduce the Z3 to the public centered around MGM's 1996 James Bond movie Goldeneye starring Pierce Brosnan. A rare 1996 BMW Z3 James Bond Edition with just 8,300 miles sold for €24,640, highlighting a preserved piece of BMW and GoldenEye history.

This 1996 BMW Z3 is #66 of 100 built in the James Bond 007 special edition to promote the film Goldeneye, and was delivered through Midwestern Automotive Group of Columbus, Ohio. The car is finished in metallic blue with a beige top and leather interior, and power is from a 1.9. 1995 BMW Z3 Plate #: BXB 608 Pierce Brosnan was handed the keys to a beautiful new BMW Z3 Roadster in his debut Bond movie, equipped with Stinger missiles behind the headlights, a nifty radar behind the stereo console and standard bullet proofing.
