I have a 2007 Toyota I have been experimenting with instrument cluster swaps. My vehicle (2007) has one signal can bus line that connects 13 ECUs all together with no gateway of any kind. After a number of failed attempts, the transmitter is knocked offline (a "bus off" condition) and has to reset its can hardware to come online again, often with a short delay to give other controllers on the bus a chance to talk.

There is a thread in the RAV4 Club in these forums here which describes Totota's addition/modification to reduce the risk of theft by Canbus injection. It is also relevant to 150 series Land Cruisers (not sure exactly what versions/years) as the vulnerability allowing the thief access via the Can. CAN Bus attack discussed here multiple times and it can be prevented by CAN/LIN immobilizer.
