Art Deco Opera House

The Civic Opera Building is a 45-story office tower (plus two 22-story wings) located at 20 North Wacker Drive in Chicago. The building opened November 4, 1929, and has an Art Deco interior. The decorative character of the entire building is a hybrid of Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles.

Comedy-tragedy masks and cornucopia of instruments abound as playful ornaments around entrances, inspired by the Paris Opera House designed by Jean-Louis-Charles Garnier. The famous painted fire curtain (depicting the parade scene from Aida) and the interior decoration details of the Lyric Opera. This structure combines a 45 story, Art Deco-style office tower with a 3,650.

Today's opera house reflects these different incarnations. A massive restoration project launched in 1994 set as its goal the renovation of the building's exterior to its original 1894 facade, and the interior to its 1931 eclectic art deco opulence.
