Sounds like you have a live and neutral feed and switch wire at the light position, if this is the case and you have connected the neutral with the switch wire this will cause the circuit to trip. The switch on the left is to turn the light on/off and the switch on the right is to turn the fan on/off. There appears to only be two walnuts only.
