Today I met with a friend, Jeff, VA3OBJ, at the Soverign House, a historical house in Oakville, ON. It is close to the lake, and so it is a candidate activating the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail Recreation Site, VE-6003.
I didn't actually go into the house, as I was more interested in the lakeshore and activating POTA. For completeness, here is the house (photo taken by VA3OBJ).
I operated from 14:41 UTC to 15:17, so not that long really, and got 13 QSOs, all on 20m SSB. Two were park-to-park.
I find it interesting that there is a circular pattern where all the contacts are outside a radius of where I was located. This is exactly what you would expect for 20m, where the daytime skip distance for 14 MHz would normally be round 750 km.
Jeff took this picture of me working POTA, along with my mascot "QRP Bear". QRP is a term used in amateur radio to describe the use of low-power operation. I was operating at 10W with a battery. In contrast at home I operate at 100 W, which is still considered modest. Some have amplifiers into the kilowatt range.
Near the lake there were some nesting Cormorants, one of my favorite birds.
There were lots of sailboats as the weather was just perfect.
