Von Luschan's chromatic scale (VLS) is a method of classifying skin color. It is also called the von Luschan scale or von Luschan's scale. It is named after its inventor, Felix von Luschan.

The equipment consisted of 36 opaque glass tiles which were compared to the subject's skin, ideally in a place which would not be exposed to the sun (such as under the arm). This is Felix von Luschan's skin color chart. I find it hard to imagine any living person would have skin color below 14. Perhaps Snow White, very pale porcelain skinned red heads and albinos.

Felix von Luschan, a German anthropologist (1854-1924), faced with the ambiguity of verbal skin description, introduced a colour tile system in which each skin shade was given a numerical digit (number) from 1 to 36. von Luschan's skin colour tiles, which reduced colour to a number, became part of a standard anthropometric toolkit, influencing the field of forensics in the early twentieth.
