The Critical Assessment of the Existing Subfloor
Before any new layer touches the ground, a forensic examination of the current subfloor is non-negotiable. The integrity of the old material dictates whether the project is feasible or destined for failure. You must verify that the existing planks or panels are securely fastened to the joists below; any loose sections will transfer instability to the new surface, creating future liabilities.
Moisture is the silent enemy of layered flooring. Conduct a thorough inspection for signs of water damage, such as persistent dampness, musty odors, or visible mold growth. These indicators suggest a leak or condensation issue that must be resolved before installation, as sealing moisture beneath a new layer will only amplify the damage and lead to mold growth within the floor system.

Material Compatibility and Structural Calculations
The type of material currently installed plays a significant role in determining the success of the overlay. While plywood and oriented strand board (OSB) are generally suitable for nailing or screwing a new layer onto, particleboard or brittle, old hardwood strips present significant risks. These materials can crumble under the pressure of fasteners or humidity changes, compromising the bond between the layers.
It is essential to calculate the cumulative height of the layers. Adding a second subfloor raises the level of the finished surface, which impacts door clearances, the fit of kitchen cabinets, and the transition where the floor meets other surfaces like tile or tile thresholds. The fasteners must penetrate both the new layer and the old layer, driving deep into the structural joists below to ensure the two floors move as a single, unified system.

Skipping the installation of proper perimeter spacing is another common error. Wood and stone expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. If the new subfloor is glued or nailed tightly against the baseboard or wall, it has no room to move. This restriction builds up internal stress, which usually results in the floor buckling, cracking, or eventually separating from the wall.

While the old subfloor provides the structural base, a modern underlayment serves specific functions that the original surface lacked. Products like foam pads or rubberized underlayments enhance the floor's sound-dampening properties, reducing the impact noise of footsteps throughout the home. Finally, allow the structure to rest and settle after the subfloor is installed. Wood needs time to adjust to the environmental conditions of the home before the final flooring is laid. Walking on the newly secured boards or applying the weight of heavy furniture too early can create depressions or break the bond.
