Embrace the joy of DIY projects and elevate your outdoor space with a stylish and functional square coffee table. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process, from planning to completion, ensuring you create a durable and attractive piece that complements your outdoor decor.

Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary materials and tools. Here's a list to help you prepare:

- 4x4 pressure-treated lumber (4 pieces, 8 feet long)
- 2x6 pressure-treated lumber (4 pieces, 8 feet long)
- 2x2 pressure-treated lumber (4 pieces, 8 feet long)
- 2.5-inch exterior wood screws
- 1.25-inch exterior wood screws
- Exterior wood glue
- Stainless steel or galvanized hardware (table legs, brackets, and screws)
- Outdoor-rated wood stain or paint
- Safety glasses
- Tape measure
- Circular saw
- Drill and driver bits
- Jigsaw (optional, for decorative edges)
- Sandpaper (120-grit)
- Clamps
Design and Measure

Determine the size of your table. For a standard square coffee table, aim for a height of 16-18 inches and a width of 16-20 inches. Here, we'll use 18x18 inches as an example:
| Dimension | Measurement |
|---|---|
| Table height | 18 inches |
| Table width | 18 inches |
| Leg length | 16 inches |
Mark and cut your lumber pieces according to these measurements:

- 4x4 legs: 4 pieces at 16 inches
- 2x6 tabletop frame: 4 pieces at 18 inches
- 2x2 tabletop slats: 10 pieces at 17.5 inches (to allow for a 0.5-inch gap between each slat)
Assemble the Table Base
Begin by attaching the legs to the tabletop frame using 2.5-inch screws and exterior wood glue. Apply glue to the ends of the legs, then secure them to the inside of the tabletop frame, ensuring the legs are flush with the top and bottom of the frame. Use clamps to hold the pieces in place while the glue dries.

Create the Tabletop
Once the base is secure, start building the tabletop. Lay out your 2x2 slats on the ground, spacing them evenly apart. Apply glue between each slat, then use 1.25-inch screws to secure them together. Allow the glue to dry before proceeding.

Attach the Tabletop to the Base
Carefully flip the table base upright. Apply glue to the top of the base, then place the tabletop onto the base, ensuring it's centered and flush with the edges. Secure the tabletop to the base using 2.5-inch screws. Allow the glue to dry completely.
Finishing Touches
Sand any rough edges or surfaces, then apply your chosen outdoor-rated stain or paint. Allow the finish to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once dry, attach the table legs using the appropriate hardware and screws.
Your DIY outdoor square coffee table is now complete and ready to be enjoyed! Place it in your outdoor space, add some decorative pillows, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
