An introduction to the Mental Capacity ActThis module is for anyone working within Health and Social Care, who are caring and supporting people over the age of 16, in England and Wales. It will assist you in learning how to support people to make decisions, aid you in identifying when a mental capacity assessment is required and how to carry one out appropriately. You will also briefly explore how 'Best Interests' decisions are made and learn your responsibilities in relation to the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. This is an essential 3 year refresher eLearning course to be completed following attendance of the Introduction to The Mental Capacity Act half day workshop. NB: under special circumstances the scheme may agree for this to be completed instead of the half day workshop but not without agreement.E-Learning 45 minutes
Basic Life Support This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. It covers basic life support and is suitable for Shared Lives Carers, Domiciliary Care Workers or Personal Assistants and staff new to care working with adults in Adult Care Provider Services or West Sussex County Council employees in either Adult or Children services who work with adults who require basic life support skills. It does not cover child or paediatric first aid. Half day course
COSHH in the home environment This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. It will introduce you to the control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) in your home or an individual’s own home E-Learning 20 minutes
Epilepsy awareness This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. The aim of this module is to provide you with an overview and awareness of the types, causes, triggers, treatment, and the impact of Epilepsy. E-Learning 25 minutes
Equality and Diversity Introduction This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. The aim of this module is to support you in considering the Equality Law 2010, which protects all, regardless of characteristics, at work. In order to understand the protection in place, you will explore the four main types of discrimination which are experienced in the workplace. You will be encouraged to consider the different protected characteristics specified under the Equality Act, which include: age, race, religion or belief, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnerships and finally, pregnancy and maternity E-Learning 15 minutes
Food Safety This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly and looks at good food safety, infection prevention and control which must be part of everyday practice to ensure that the people being supported receive safe and effective care. Carers also need to be aware of ways to promote adequate nutrition and hydration to maintain the wellbeing of those being supported. E-Learning 60 minutes
Fire - Care Providers This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It will provide an introduction to health and safety in relation to Fire, including what is necessary for a fire to start and spread, the risks of fire in your workplace, as well as the procedures to follow if you discover a fire.E-Learning 15 Minutes 
General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. The aim of this module is to support you in raising your awareness of the new General Data Protection Regulations and the requirements that it sets out by law. You will examine the data protection principles in relation to personal data and the rights of individuals under this new legislation. E-Learning 20 minutes
Home safety (Electrical, Gas, Water, General Environment) This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. It may also be relevant to domiciliary care workers, personal assistants and anyone caring for an individual in their own home. It will cover best practice and guidance on ensuring your home or another individual’s home environment is safe. E-Learning 20 minutes
Internet Safety for Shared Lives Carers This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. The aim of this workshop is to enable Shared Lives Carers to appreciate the balance of risk and safety associated with the Internet. Half day workshop
Introduction to the Mental Capacity Act training This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. The aim of this course is to introduce you to the five principles of the Mental Capacity Act, to learn about the test for mental capacity, to find out who can make decisions if somebody lacks mental capacity, and to learn how a best interests decision can be made. You will learn how to carry out and record a simple assessment of mental capacity, and how to make and record a simple best interests decision. The course will give an introduction to ways people can plan ahead for a time when they may lose capacity to make certain decisions.  Half day course
Medication Awareness for Shared Lives Carers This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. Failure to update this may lead to a return to Panel for non-compliance with the Training Agreement (which forms part of your contract with WSCC). Attendance will help you to gain/refresh your understanding of the safe handling, storage, recording and administration of medicines and your responsibilities as a Shared Lives Carer. If you apply what you have learnt on this workshop you will be able to: Update your knowledge on the safe storage and administration of medication. Promote people’s independence with managing their medication. Half day workshop
Moving and Handling of Inanimate Objects This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. It may also be relevant to domiciliary care workers, personal assistants and anyone caring for an individual in their own home. It will advise you on how to lift inanimate objects safely and look after your back. It will also help you advise those you support on the importance of safe moving and handling E-Learning 15 minutes
Safeguarding Adults at Risk Shared Lives This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly and provides a basic awareness of the adult safeguarding principles underpinning Making Safeguarding Personal. It particularly looks at issues within the Shared Lives Model of care. This course is essential and must be updated every 3 years. Failure to update this may lead to a return to Panel for non-compliance with the Training Agreement which forms part of your contract with WSCC. Half day Workshop
Supporting Positive behaviour in people with a learning disability This module is essential for Shared Lives Carers providing a service in, or based from, their own home. It should be refreshed three yearly. The aim of this workshop is to enable you to reflect on reasons why people behave in ways that could be perceived as challenging. The workshop will also enable you to consider approaches that support individuals to communicate positively. Full day workshop
Shared Lives eLearning WorkshopThis full day course is for Shared Lives Carers and Shared Lives support carers, it will provide you with access to a facilitated forum of support to complete the essential training outlined in this pathway.Full day workshop

Understanding Autism: Exploring Sensory Awareness
The aim of this course is to explore the impact of sensory processing difficulties on people with autism spectrum disorders and offers a method of assessing for sensory differences, including the design of an individual sensory profile.
The course will then determine how the assessment results can be used to plan environments, teaching strategies and communication plans for each individual.

Makaton Foundation The aim of this course is to provide you with a detailed introduction to Makaton and combines a practical approach with theory and technical information, as well as an experiential introduction to communication disability.

What causes Dementia This module is for anyone who wants to develop an understanding of the causes of dementia. The module looks at the causes of dementia, the similarities and differences between different types of dementia and the functions of the brain and how they are affected. Finally, the module explores the factors that can increase and decrease the risk of developing dementia.

Person Centred Practice for Adults The aim of this course is to assist you in developing your capability to use a range of person-centred tools and approaches so that people using services feel happier and safer.
After attending the course you will be able to support others to develop their knowledge and skills and make personalisation and safeguarding a focus within every day support.

Nutrition, Hydration and using the malnutrition universal screening tool (MUST)
This workshop will look at ways that you can support the person using the service, to prevent malnutrition and dehydration from occurring. This will include exploring the types of food that can benefit a person’s wellbeing and improve their general health.

The workshop will support you to assess the risk of malnutrition and dehydration, by using a recognised screening tool, which will aid measurement and observation, as well as provide a measurable record of a person’s risk status. The screening tool is used to record BMI status, weight loss etc. which highlights the need for dietary review and action e.g. if a person using the service has sudden weight loss or weight gain.

Fundamental Core Care Skills - Oral Healthcare and Safer Swallow
Mouth care is an essential part of personal care that often gets overlooked. This can have a negative impact on a person's comfort, quality of life, general health, well-being and dignity. This event seeks to assist you in developing your awareness of oral hygiene and swallowing issues (dysphagia).
The workshop will focus on diagnosis, person-centred care planning, and living and ageing well. You will also be introduced to available support from the local palliative care and primary care teams.
