BMW i3 REx: Road-Tripping With 72 Electric Miles, 1.9-Gallon Gas Tank

It's my understanding that many of the F1 fuel tanks are bladders which wouldn't work on the i3 since it uses a pressurized fuel tank. Putting one further forward would put it into the crush zone, and not likely a great idea. Looks like 3 people have done it on the BMW i3 World Wide group on FB by adding an additional fuel cell in place of the frunk storage area.

This limitation has prompted some users to modify their i3 with an additional gas tank, stored in the compact trunk space at the front of the car and piped into the range extender's fuel line. One of the great perks of the i3 is that despite having a fairly low electric range, it was available with a range extender to quell range anxiety. However, to qualify as a zero-emission vehicle in America, BMW had to artificially restrict the fuel capacity of the range extender's tank.

With the right BMW i3 coding, it's easy to recode your i3 REx and flexibly activate battery charge hold mode. And to keep you driving even longer, get a gas tank capacity upgrade. This document provides comprehensive technical specifications and detailed information about the fuel system of the 2014-Present BMW i3, including fuel type, fuel tank capacity, fuel delivery system, and related components.

It covers both the internal combustion engine (REx) and electric drivetrain configurations, ensuring accurate and up. The BMW i3 is an electric vehicle that can be optioned with a nifty range-extender engine which runs on gasoline - a series hybrid set up exactly like the new Ram Ramcharger. It's a great way to avoid the problem of slow EV chargers on long trips, save for one problem-it has a tiny fuel tank that lasts maybe an hour or two at best on the highway.

That's led several owners to develop. Recent developments reveal that the fuel tank capacity of the i3 REx was not physically reduced, but rather controlled via software. This was accomplished by shutting off the fuel pump at 1.9 gallons.

In the US, the fuel tank was restricted to 1.9 gallons so the i3 REx can qualify for incentives. The Range Extender could add anywhere from 40 to 80 miles of range based on the driving mode. The BMW USA builder page claims a US i3 Rex can reach 185 miles of range.

So is the USA site wrong, or is the Rex tank size actually the same in the US version as it is in Europe?
