A sudden leak beneath your sprinkler head often points to a damaged riser. This small vertical pipe connects the underground main line to the sprinkler body, and because it sits just below the soil surface, it is vulnerable to damage from lawn mowers, foot traffic, and ground movement. Fixing a broken sprinkler head riser is a straightforward task that requires minimal tools and saves you from wasting water and money on constant repairs.
Identifying a Broken Riser
The first step in any repair is a clear diagnosis. A broken riser often causes the sprinkler head to sink, tilt, or leak at the base. You might notice water pooling in the middle of your sprinkler pattern or see visible cracks in the plastic riser where it meets the head or the supply line. These symptoms distinguish a riser issue from a clogged nozzle or a problem with the underground valve.
Safety and Preparation
Before touching the system, turn off the water supply and manually drain the line to avoid a messy geyser. Locate the control valve for the zone and turn it off. If your system lacks a dedicated zone valve, you may need to shut off the main water supply to the irrigation system. Waiting a few minutes after turning off the system allows pressure to equalize and prevents debris from rushing into the open pipe during disassembly.

Removing the Damaged Riser
Use the correct tools to avoid cracking the sprinkler housing. A sturdy pair of channel-lock pliers and a hex key set are usually sufficient. Carefully unscrew the sprinkler head from the riser. If the riser is broken off flush with the ground, you will need a riser extractor tool or a pair of vise-grips to grip the top of the pipe. Turn slowly and counter-clockwise; if the riser is corroded or stuck, apply a penetrating oil and wait a few minutes to loosen the corrosion before trying again.
Using a Riser Puller Tool
For broken stubs that are difficult to grip, a rubber-jawed riser puller is the safest option. Slide the puller over the remaining pipe and tighten the knob until the jaws bite into the interior of the pipe. Gently twist the tool until the riser breaks free. This method prevents debris from falling into the pipe and keeps the threads of the main line undamaged.
Preparing the Pipe and Replacement Parts
Once the old riser is removed, inspect the pipe threads on the main line. Blow out any debris or dirt with compressed air to ensure a clean seal. Check the condition of the PVC or poly tubing; if the thread is stripped or the pipe is cracked, you may need to replace a larger section of the line. For a standard repair, applying a thin layer of PVC primer and cement to the new riser ensures a watertight connection that lasts through seasonal temperature changes.

Installing the New Riser
Screw the new riser into the supply line by hand first, aligning the threads carefully to avoid cross-threading. Hand-tighten the connection firmly, then use the wrench to complete the turn—one quarter to half turn past hand tight is usually sufficient. Avoid over-tightening, as this can crack the fragile plastic components. Before threading on the sprinkler head, adjust the riser to the correct height so that the final assembly sits level with the surrounding soil.
Testing the Repair
Turn the water supply back on slowly and watch the joint for any signs of leakage. If the seal holds, place the sprinkler head back onto the riser and screw it on until it is snug. Power on the zone and observe the spray pattern; a properly installed riser will produce an even arc without wobbling. Walk the perimeter to confirm that the head is at the correct height and that there are no new low spots where equipment or vehicles could damage it again.
