All gender bathroom layout considerations for public restrooms, focusing on overall layout of the bathroom. Gender-neutral bathrooms are designed for use by anyone, regardless of gender identity. Whether they take the form of fully enclosed single-use rooms or multi-stall layouts with floor-to-ceiling partitions, these spaces are all about inclusivity.
In two newly-opened halls hugging the rotunda of Oregon's Capitol, a set of wooden doors stand side by side, wall to floor. Mirrors with sinks and bright lights radiate in the background, with a sign on the front entrance reading: "This is a multi-stall, all-user restroom." The first-floor bathrooms are a new addition brought forth by a decade-long, $598 million construction project. For years, the Monthly Event Queer Bar Takeover has been a cherished space for the LGBTQ+ community, offering a platform for queer joy and uninhibited expression.
One of the ways we have embodied our mission to "reclaim space" is by replacing traditional bathroom signs with gender-neutral ones that simply read "Stalls" and "Urinals." In this blog post, we delve into the reasons behind this. MixDesign's ongoing research project called Stalled! has yielded prototypes and recommendations for creating truly inclusive facilities. MixDesign's rethink of gender-neutral bathrooms at Gallaudet University's student center in Washington, D.C., demonstrates this philosophy.
"Gender-neutral" bathrooms are typically a single-stall, lockable bathroom available to people of all genders and sexes. Gender-neutral bathrooms provide a safe, private facility for transgender, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming people, families with children, and people with disabilities who may need assistance. Fewer fixtures and fittings also reduce the amount of time and money spent cleaning and maintaining them.
"Two gendered bathrooms might take up 1,000 square feet, but that footprint might shrink to 750 square feet in one all gender restroom with shared sinks and toilets," Truemper said. These savings can really add up for multistory buildings.
