How to Create Fishbone Diagrams in Excel

Next, create a new worksheet and label it "Fishbone Diagram". This will be where you'll build your diagram. Since the fishbone shape involves lines and arrows, make sure the worksheet is wide enough. You can adjust the column width by double-clicking the line between two column headers.

The first step in creating a fishbone diagram is to draw the central spine, which represents the effect or problem statement. Select the 'Insert' tab, then click on 'Shapes'. Choose the 'Line' shape, click anywhere on your worksheet and drag to draw a horizontal line.

Before proceeding, resize and make your line appeal visually more as the spine of a fish. You can do this: select the line, then select the Format tab from the options that appear on the right side of the screen. From here, you can modify the line's thickness and color.

Adding the Ribs

The cause categories that contribute to the problem statement are usually represented as horizontal lines, or ribs, branching out from the central spine. Using the same 'Line' shape, draw several horizontal lines that intersect the spine, representing the different cause categories. Ensure that the ribs are all of the same length for a clean, professional look.

With the ribs in place, you can now start labeling your cause categories. Click on each rib, then click in the center of the cell above or below to place your text box. Type in the corresponding category and adjust the text box's size and position for a clean, neat layout.

Creating Connections
