Installing a simple backyard drain solves this issue by redirecting excess moisture to a safe discharge point, protecting your foundation and landscaping. This process involves careful planning, the right materials, and adherence to local regulations to ensure the solution is both effective and long-lasting.
Planning Your Drainage Path
Before breaking ground, you must map the course of your new drain. The goal is to move water away from structures and toward a suitable outlet, such as a storm drain, ditch, or lower part of your property. Local building codes often dictate specific requirements, so checking with your municipality is the critical first step to avoid future fines or mandatory rework.
Observe how water flows across your yard during a rainstorm. Natural slopes dictate the path of least resistance, and aligning your drain with this flow reduces excavation difficulty and ensures gravity does the work for you. You need to determine the fall, or slope, which typically requires a drop of at least 1 inch for every 8 feet of length to maintain consistent water movement without clogging.

Choosing the Right Drain Type
Two primary methods exist for backyard drainage: an underground dry well or a simple French drain. A dry well is a pit filled with gravel that collects and disperses water into the soil, ideal for areas where you have heavy clay soil that doesn't drain well. Alternatively, a French drain uses a perforated pipe surrounded by gravel to channel water along a specific path, making it suitable for directing runoff across longer distances.
For most residential applications involving a direct connection to a storm drain or redirecting water from a downspout, a PVC pipe system is the most reliable choice. This rigid pipe maintains its slope and resists clogging, providing a durable solution that outperforms flexible corrugated tubing over the long term. The choice between these systems depends on your soil composition, the volume of water, and the layout of your yard.
Excavation and Pipe Preparation
With the path laid out, you can begin excavation. Dig a trench that is wider than the pipe diameter—typically around 12 to 18 inches—and deep enough to accommodate the pipe with a proper slope, usually 6 to 12 inches deeper than the pipe diameter. These dimensions ensure the gravel bedding provides adequate support and allows water to enter the drain efficiently.

Once the trench is dug, clear the bottom of the soil of roots and debris. If you are using a perforated pipe for a French drain, position the pipe with the holes facing down. This orientation allows water to seep into the pipe from the soil surrounding it rather than flowing over the top. Wrap the pipe in a heavy-duty filter fabric to prevent silt from entering and clogging the perforations over time.
Backfilling and Finishing
With the pipe in place, you can begin backfilling. Start by adding a few inches of gravel around the pipe to create a stable base. As you refill the trench, alternate layers of gravel and excavated soil, ensuring the pipe remains centered and the trench is filled solidly. Proper compaction prevents the ground from settling unevenly, which could break the pipe or alter the crucial slope.
Finally, grade the surface so the grass can grow smoothly over the trench. The drain opening, if visible, should be flush with the ground to prevent tripping hazards and mowing damage. While the system is now functional, maintaining the inlet area by removing leaves and debris ensures the drain operates at full capacity for years to come.
