Review: BMW CE 04 This sci-fi-worthy electric ride has gone from cool concept to the street almost unchanged. Photograph: BMW. With 4,700 miles (7500km) and 9 months under my belt, it's time for my long-term review of the BMW CE 04.

Introduction In 2022, BMW released the CE 04: a futuristic-looking spaceship in a sea of boring two-wheeled EVs. It made quite a splash, with BMW selling nearly 5000 in the first year. BMW is marching forward with electric vehicles, and the latest creation for two.

The design of the BMW CE 04 centers around the slim energy storage unit in the underfloor assembly and the compact drivetrain. The design liberties and solutions here have led to new aesthetics, for instance the charging compartment that folds out towards the side or the floating seat. The CE 04 is BMW Motorrad's latest offering and is equivalent in performance to a 400cc gasoline-powered scooter, hence the "04″ in its name.

I've been a scooter rider for decades. How does BMW's odd-looking, expensive but powerful all-electric CE 04 compare to my gas-powered style machines? BMW's radical CE 04 electric scooter is the brand's urban transportation flagship.

For my quick test ride on this purpose-built city runabout, I had a few hours to ride around Berlin unsupervised for an ideal first impression, riding the bike the way it was meant to be ridden, in the city where it was built.
