This magic-like tool is essentially a very fine abrasive that works like super-fine sandpaper. You do not need to load it with water; simply moisten the sponge slightly to create a smooth glide. Gently rub the soot spot in one direction, not circularly, to avoid grinding the carbon deeper into the paint’s pores. Because this method removes a microscopic layer of paint, you must be cautious with glossy finishes and test it in an inconspicuous spot first to ensure you do not create a dull patch.
Chemical and Liquid Cleaning
When the dry methods fall short, it is time to deploy a liquid solution. A classic and effective DIY mixture is a simple blend of dish soap and warm water. The degreasing power of the soap helps to break down the oily components of the soot. Alternatively, for more stubborn, oil-based marks, you might need a specialized cleaner like Trisodium Phosphate (TSP), which is a heavy-duty degreaser. TSP is incredibly effective but requires caution: it is caustic, requires good ventilation, and can be harsh on your skin, necessitating gloves and eye protection.
