Unlike municipal water supplies that rely on constant municipal pressure, a well system depends on a storage tank and an air charge to create flow. The pressure tank acts as a hydraulic battery, storing water under pressure so the pump does not have to cycle on and off constantly. When you turn on a faucet, water is pushed out of the tank by compressed air. As the water leaves the tank, the air pressure drops, eventually triggering the pressure switch to turn the pump on and refill the tank. If this balance is disrupted, the result is low pressure or short cycling.
Diagnosing the Problem

Before attempting any fixes, you must determine the root cause of the pressure loss. Grab a tire gauge and check the air pressure in the tank when the pump is off. The standard pre-charge should be roughly 2 psi below the pump’s cut-in pressure (usually 40 psi, making the initial charge around 38 psi).
