Often grown for its dramatic, slender trunk and vibrant green leaves, this plant can become root-bound very quickly, especially in the relatively small pots it is often sold in. Signs Your Madagascar Tree Needs a New Home

Before you grab a new pot and soil, you must confirm that the tree is actually stressed by its current container. A plant that is slightly root-bound will often dry out more quickly, requiring water every few days. However, a severely root-bound specimen might actually struggle to absorb water, leading to dehydration despite a moist soil surface. Other clear indicators include roots protruding from the drainage holes, soil that has broken down and becomes hydrophobic, or the plant becoming top-heavy and unstable. Stunted growth during the active season is another definitive sign that the root system has maxed out its space.
Choosing the Right Pot and Soil

Selecting the appropriate vessel is arguably the most important step in the repotting process. Madagascar trees are highly susceptible to rot, so drainage is non-negotiable. You must choose a pot with at least one, but preferably multiple, large drainage holes. The new container should only be 2 to 4 inches wider in diameter than the current one; going too large increases the risk of the soil staying wet for too long, which can suffocate the roots.
