The darkness is definitely exaggerated by some people. It's still fundamentally the same story with the themes and characters, it just constantly goes more in the tone that the Overhaul arc was in (on a larger scale). Can't really explain in detail without getting into spoilers, but the atmosphere is more grim and the setting more brutal.
