Grey. Brown. Purple.

And rainbow. The reason? The South China Morning Post talked to the MTR Corporation's chief architect to find out. The main reason bright colours were adopted when the first line opened in the 1970s was to lighten up the subway system, according to Andrew Mead.

The vibrant hues of Hong Kong's MTR stations have their roots in an austere government. Choi Hung, one of Hong Kong's brightest stations! But why does each MTR station have its own colour, and what do they mean? When Hong Kong's mass transit railway lines were being built, it was decided the stations should be colourful to beautify them, and different colours were chosen to help travellers who couldn. The original system only had three lines with three easy to distinguish colours: red. MTR chief architect Andrew Mead revealed that stations were color-coded in the 1970s in part because large swaths of the population weren't literate. The different colors provided an easy way to identify stations.
