Mushroom Dyeing Workshop

The workshop includes a mushroom dye kit. It will include 4 different dye mushrooms, pre-mordanted fiber, supplies to make 'lakes' from your dye baths and an at home equipment list. You will get the most out of the workshop if you are prepared and follow along doing the steps with me while at home.

These workshops are separate from the International Symposia which are sponsored world-wide by the IFFF. Instructors from the IMDI are invited by local mycological societies, textile arts groups, and community education programs. Mushroom Dye Workshop In this hands-on workshop, Wilder Herbertson will show you the ropes for making dye from mushrooms and successfully dyeing silk handkerchiefs.

Using two species of mushroom (Phaeolus schweinitzii and Hypomyces lactiflorum/lobster), we will get to produce four colors by manipulating pH and the mordant used. The workshop will begin with a day in the forest, where participants will learn to identify and forage for dye mushrooms with guidance from Julie. The following two days will be spent in the studio, exploring various mushroom dye techniques, including making pigments, inks, and watercolors.

The workshop at BARN promises to be a comprehensive introduction to mushroom dyeing. Participants will learn about mushroom and lichen identification, ethical foraging practices, and extracting and using fungal dyes. Wildcraft Dyeing is devoted to providing information on how to forage, process and use natural dyes from plants, mushrooms and lichens.

This class will teach the basics of dyeing Fabric with mushrooms! We will study 2 or more mushrooms and create 4 or more colors with these mushrooms, learning about PH, mordants and more! Using local mushrooms we will create a rainbow of colors, by using different mushroom species, mordants, and shifting. Participants receive a procedural handout, a customized guide to local dye fungi and a beautiful hand dyed scarf. This workshop covers all aspects of getting started with mushroom and lichen dyes and leaves the student with the tools to carry on with their own exploration.
