"Tachybaptus Ruficollis en España: Descubre al Buceador"

The Tachybaptus ruficollis, commonly known as the Little Grebe or Dabchick, is a small, diving bird species native to freshwater habitats across Europe, Asia, and Africa. In Spain, this bird is a common resident, breeding in various water bodies, including lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. Let's delve into the fascinating world of the Little Grebe in Spain.

Physical Characteristics

The Little Grebe is one of the smallest European grebe species, with a length of around 25-29 cm and a wingspan of 40-45 cm. They have a distinctive, compact body, a short tail, and a large head. Their plumage is mostly dark brown, with a white face and a red-brown neck in breeding season. Non-breeding adults have a greyish-brown head and neck.

Identification in Spain

In Spain, the Little Grebe can be easily identified by its small size, dark brown body, and white face. They often swim low in the water, with only their head and neck visible. During breeding season, the red-brown neck provides a striking contrast to the white face.

Habitat and Distribution in Spain

The Little Grebe is widely distributed across Spain, breeding in various freshwater habitats. They prefer shallow, weedy lakes and ponds, but can also be found in reservoirs and marshes. They are less common in brackish waters and avoid the sea.

  • Breeding Habitats: Shallow lakes, ponds, and marshes with abundant vegetation for nesting.
  • Non-breeding Habitats: Larger lakes, reservoirs, and rivers with some vegetation.

Behavior and Ecology

Little Grebes are primarily solitary birds, except during the breeding season when they form pairs. They are excellent swimmers and divers, feeding mainly on small fish, invertebrates, and aquatic plants. Their diet varies depending on the availability of food sources.

Feeding Habits

Little Grebes feed by diving and swimming underwater, using their long, pointed bill to catch prey. They can also feed by walking on the bottom of shallow water, probing for food. Their diet includes small fish like minnows, insect larvae, and aquatic invertebrates.

Breeding Season and Nesting

The breeding season in Spain typically occurs between March and August, depending on the region. Little Grebes build floating nests made of vegetation, anchored to emergent plants or submerged structures. The nest is usually built by both parents, with the female laying 3-6 white eggs.

Incubation and Chicks

Both parents incubate the eggs for about 21-25 days. The chicks hatch covered in dark grey down and are able to swim and dive within a few hours. They are fed by both parents and grow rapidly, fledging at around 45-50 days old.

Conservation Status in Spain

The Little Grebe is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. In Spain, they are widespread and common, with stable or increasing populations in many regions. However, they can be affected by habitat loss and degradation, pollution, and climate change.

Csodálatos - kis vöcsök (Tachybaptus ruficollis) Eurázsiában és Afrikában is megtalálható. Azokon a területeken, ahol befagy a víz, ott vándorol, máshol állandó madár. A szem vörösesbarna, szemsávja sárgászöld, a csőr töve sárgászöld, a hegye fekete. A párok tél folyamán állnak össze. Április és július között a tojó 4-6 fehéreszöld tojást rak, amelyeken a szülők felváltva 20-27 napig kotlanak. A fészkét, amely egyfajta úszófészek, a nyílt víztükör közelében, vízinövényekből építi. Mindkét szülő gondozza az utódokat. Magányosan fészkelő. Magyarországon rendszeres fészkelő március-november hónapokban, néha áttelel (pl.: Hévízi-tó). Csodálatos madárvilág | Facebook
