Chromatography is a technique that separates these pigments based on their affinity for a stationary phase (like paper) and a mobile phase (like a solvent).

Materials Needed

  • Fresh flowers (e.g., pansies, violets, or petunias)
  • Chloroform or rubbing alcohol
  • Coffee filter or filter paper
  • Small glass vial or test tube
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Shallow dish

Setting Up the Experiment

Begin by carefully removing the petals from the flowers, ensuring you have enough to fill your glass vial. Place the petals in the vial and add just enough chloroform or rubbing alcohol to cover them. Seal the vial and let it sit for a few hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the pigments to fully infuse into the solvent.

Preparing the Chromatography Paper

While the pigments are infusing, prepare your chromatography paper. Cut a strip of coffee filter or filter paper, about 1-2 inches wide and long enough to dip into the dish you'll use for chromatography (around 8-10 inches). Mark a starting point about 1 inch from the bottom of the strip using a pencil.

Performing the Chromatography

Pour some of the pigment-infused solvent into a shallow dish. Dip the bottom of your chromatography paper strip into the solvent, ensuring it's fully saturated but not dripping. Place the strip in a test tube or glass vial, making sure the solvent line is below the starting point you marked earlier. Allow the solvent to travel up the paper by capillary action. This may take several hours or even overnight.

Analyzing the Results

Once the solvent has traveled about halfway up the paper, remove it and allow it to dry completely. You should now see distinct bands of color, each representing a different pigment. Measure the distance each band traveled from the starting point using a ruler. The pigments will have separated based on their polarity and size, with more polar and smaller pigments traveling farther up the paper.

Interpreting the Results
