Overflowing gutters are a common culprit in backyard water disasters. Gutters clogged with leaves can’t channel water away, causing the liquid to cascade over the sides and pool near the foundation. The fix is straightforward: keep your gutters clean and extend the downspouts. Instead of letting the water drop right next to the house, use downspout extensions or a downspout diverter to aim the flow at least 6 to 10 feet away, or directly into a rain barrel or garden bed.
