Digging a hole that is too deep is a common mistake that can bury the trunk base, leading to suffocation and disease.

The Ratio of Excavation
When preparing the soil that will fill the hole, the composition of the backfill mix is crucial. A general rule of thumb is to blend the excavated native soil with high-quality compost in a ratio of approximately 50:50. This ensures that the transition zone between the root ball and the surrounding soil is gradual, preventing the roots from becoming "pot-bound" in a rich amendment bath.
