Nothing is known of Stephen Todd's parents. They were believed to be a slave woman and a plantation owner. It is also believed that Stephen served as a caretaker of the horses, although not much is known about his childhood or early manhood.
Stephen Todd escaped slavery and went from Kentucky to Indiana. On September 22, 1864, Stephen enlisted in the service. He was mustered in at Indianapolis, Indiana. Stephen was thirty-eight years old and served in the 8th Regiment, US Colored Infantry as a substitute for Andrew J. Huff of Washington Township, Marion County, Indiana. Stephen enlisted for three years but mustered out May 19, 1865, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Stephen Todd met Caroline Kahler, and both ran away together to Canada. On August 29, 1874, they were united in marriage at Windsor, County of Essex, Providence of Ontario, Canada. The wedding was witnessed by Isaac and William Berry.
Stephen and Caroline Todd's first child, Charles, was born in 1875 in Canada. The other nine children were born in Michigan from 1877 to 1897. Stephen and Caroline Todd were married for 24 years. Stephen died July 9, 1898, of cystitis, according to Dr N. R. Bradley. Caroline died sometime after July 16, 1900, but before 1901.
Stephen suffered from chronic illnesses, back and spinal problems, heart disease, and an injury to the left arm. This was according to an application for a pension on September 11, 1890. Correspondence continued for the pension for 10 years, but both died trying. To the best of our knowledge, no pension for war was ever received.
Stephen and Caroline were very poor. They possessed two cows and twenty-four chickens, yielding about $30 a year in income. The children had to fend for themselves with no relatives to help because Caroline's parents disowned her. The children did remarkably well with no help available. It made them tough, stern and hard workers to survive. Their children were: Charles 1875; Louis 1876; Mary Jane 1880; William 1882; Sophia 1885; John 1887; Florence 1888; Fredrick 1890; Victoria 1893 and Irene 1897. Charles, Louis, and Mary worked away from home as soon as they were able. William later worked at lumber camps and was the head of the family until Sophia was able to manage. Sophia remained the head of the family until the last five were on their own. The youngest boys--John and Fred could not attend school because they were needed on the farm to ensure food for the summer and winter.
Florence Todd, the seventh child and third daughter of Stephen and Caroline Todd, married Arthur Jack Green. They had no children. She died on May 7, 1971. Victoria Todd was the ninth child and fourth daughter of Stephen and Caroline Todd. Victor first married Ira Venable and later married Louis Henderson. She raised Hermitta Davis. Victoria died on April 1, 1967. Hermitta married Sylvester Coleman. They had a daughter, Joanne Dawson. Joanne married Paul Agee, and they had one son, Anthony. They all live in Detroit, Michigan. (Daughter Hermitta is shown on the Fred Todd Page). Mary Jane Todd was the third child and first daughter of Stephen and Caroline Todd. She worked on the farm and was married a few times. Her last marriage was to Clarence Richardson. At one time, she lived in Chicago. Later, she moved back to Remus, where she died on November 4, 1946.
In embroidered and painted pictures and text, the Todd Family Quilt chronicles the experiences of the Todd family members in their journey to settlement in a mid-Michigan farming community. Each block portrays carefully researched information about the Todd family, including lists of individuals within each generation, a pictorial depiction of a family story, an embroidered copy of a family document or historical photograph, painted coats-of-arms, and plat maps of family farmsteads. As the makers -- Deonna Green and her mother, Ione Todd -- reveal in their oral accounts, the quilt is the result of painstaking research into their family history.
This quilt is the third version of this design. The first one was raffled off at the Old Settlers' Reunion held annually in Mecosta for descendants of the first African-American settlers in Mecosta, Montcalm, and Isabella counties. A cousin won that raffle and now owns the quilt. A second version was made so that the Todd Family History could be shared with other family members; this version was shown in a national exhibition called \"Stitching Memories: African-American Story Quilts,\" organized by the Williams College of Art in 1990. The third version was commissioned by the Michigan State University Museum for their collection and was included in the 1991 exhibition, \"African-American Quilt Making Traditions in Michigan.\"
Note:
In the last fifteen years, there has been a surge of interest in historical and contemporary African-American quilt-making, resulting in numerous exhibitions and publications. In 1983, as part of the Michigan Quilt Project, the staff of the Michigan Traditional Arts Program at the Michigan State University Museum began collecting information on African-American quilt-making in the state. This program led to the museum's current exhibit, \"African-American Quilt Making Traditions in Michigan,\" which runs through 29 September 1991. Approximately forty to fifty quilts are being shown with descriptive labels and photographs of the quilters. On these four pages are examples of the beautifully pieced and skillfully sewn quilts presently [1991] on exhibit at the MSU Museum.
This article appeared in Michigan History Magazine, July/August 1991, pp. 20-23. Marsha MacDowell is the Michigan State University Museum curator of folk arts; Lynne Swanson is the assistant curator of folk arts. The quilts are from the collections of the Michigan State University Museum. Reflections & Recollections - Amusing Todd Stories - By: Marvin Lett
Country Folks Don't Need Telephones
It was a sunny summer afternoon, and we decided to take a Sunday drive around Detroit. I was driving my new 1965 Buick. My cousin Evelyn Norman and I decided to go to Norma Todd's house. But wouldn't you know it, Evelyn did not have her address book or Norma's address.
She said: \"I know just about where the house is, but I am not exactly sure.\" After driving up and down Scovel several times, every house started to look alike. I said, \"Evelyn, don't you remember her house or the exact block?\" She said, \"Marvin, be quiet, keep driving, and let me look.\" \"We will find it.\"
It was then that I decided to take action because I was tired and wanted to go home. I parked in the block where I thought Norma lived and began to holler her name. I cusp my hands together and started calling: \"N-O-R-M-A!\" \"N-O-R-M-A!\" \"N-O-R-M-A!\"
As it was summertime, people's front doors were open. All of a sudden. From the silence almost half a block away came a response in my direction. \"W-H-A-T!\"
Lo and behold it was Norma's voice. She came out on the front porch H-O-L-L-E-R-I-N-G!!!!!!!!!!
\"W-H-O-S-E T-H-E-R-E?\"
When she found out it was us, she hollered:
\"C-O-M-E O-N I-N!\"
Who says country folks need telephones?
