Guy, Sr. was born August 8, 1772, in Ann Arundle County, Maryland. He was the progenitor of all the Guys in Southeastern Ohio. Everyone called him Gran Dad Guy. He married Deborah Ridgley. He died in 1866 at the age of 94. His children were: Lloyd, Andrew, Mary A., Henrietta, Lydia, Amos C., James, Jr., Allen, William, Samuel, Elish, and Sarah. The oldest son, Lloyd Ellsworth Guy, was born on Feb 27, 1798, in Maryland. He was the oldest son of James A. Guy, Sr., and Deborah Ridgley. He was born on Feb. 27, 1798, in Maryland. He married Margaret Caliman. Their seven children were: Moses C., James, William, Benjamin F., Elijah H., Margaret, and Mary.
Moses C. Guy (July 31, 1829), the first son of Lloyd and Margaret Caliman-Guy, moved with his family from Ohio to Montcalm County. Moses later came to the Blanchard area, where he farmed and owned 40 acres of land, including the Guy Lake property in Rolland Township.
Frank \"Tasey\" Guy was born to Moses C. and Mary A. Guy in 1855 in Zanesville, OH. He married Lydia Ellen Guy (Aunt Lyd). To this union, two sons were born: Clarence and Delbert. \"Tasey\" worked in the lumber woods for Joe Lett during the winter months, but he also owned his own farm and worked the land located 1-1/2 miles south of his father, Moses' property. Like most of the Guy men, Tasey had a good head for business and was known for being financially secure. It was not uncommon for people to come to Frank for a loan of money. Because of his standing in the community, the small lake on his father's property was named Guy Lake in honor of Frank. Frank and Laura extended their concern to others by the care they exhibited to a small child named Jennie McTice.
Clarence, the eldest son of Frank and Lydia Guy, worked as a brakeman for the C&O Railroad. He was the first Black person to work for them. Clarence died June 1, 1910, in Owosso, MI, while working. Because of Clarence's physical appearance (red hair, blue eyes, fair skin), his brother was not allowed to claim his body at the time of death because the railroad company didn't believe he was of black descent. Del returned home without his brother's body, and a neighbor was sent to claim the body. Clarence never married.
Delbert Guy, the second child of Frank and Lydia Ellen Guy, was born on January 2, 1879. He attended the Beard School located across the road from his father's property. Del married Elva Mae Segee at the Isabella County Seat in Mt. Pleasant, MI. (SEE JOHN SEGEE).
John Welcome Guy
John Welcome Guy, the fourth child of William Guy and Elizabeth Segee-Guy, was born in Bushnell Township, Montcalm County, Michigan, in 1869. John and his two surviving siblings became the first Michiganians in the William Guy Family. Their parents, William and Elizabeth, had settled on farmland in Bushnell in 1862. Their family became the community's first Black residents in a poor white farming area near Vickeryville.
In 1872, the family moved to Rolland Township, Isabella County. John and his two sisters, Theodosia and Margaret, attended Oberlin School, a log schoolhouse built in 1867 two miles from their home. Later, a wood-frame school was built during the 1870s. They walked to and from school every day. Their father etched notches in the trees along the path so they would not get lost. John and Theodosia completed the Oberlin School. Margaret died at age 15.
John Welcome married Alice Dell Myers (1873-1949), daughter of John Myers of Remus, Michigan. Their surviving children were: Clyde, Gladys, Wealthy, Jessie, Lloyd, and Wenda. John was an excellent horseman. He used his team of horses to haul logs to the nearby sawmill for $.50 a day. Alice was a homemaker and also a midwife in the Rolland area. They raised their family on the William Guy farm, which had been equally bequeathed to Theodosia and John. Theodosia married John W. Cross of Remus, MI.
After the children were grown, the farm was sold. John and Alice moved to Lansing for a few years but later returned to the Rolland area. John died in Battle Creek in 1936. Alice died in Detroit in 1949. Both are buried in Pine River Cemetery, Blanchard, Isabella County, Michigan.
Harry P. Guy
Harry P. Guy was born in July 1870 in Zanesville, Ohio, to Samuel (b. 1843, Ohio) and Lucy A. Guy (b. 1847, Virginia). He was about eight years old when he began the study of piano, violin, and pipe organ. As a youth, he peddled the black-owned Cleveland Gazette, and along with his brother Erin and sister, Ella M. Guy, he participated in a variety of musical events sponsored by his school, Hill High (class of 1886) and church, St. Paul A. M. E. He apparently had the opportunity to meet members of Donavin's Original Tennesseans when they appeared in Zanesville, including the black tenor and composer H. M. Wilson, as well as Alexander Luca of the famed Luca Brothers.
\"During that period when Detroit was known as the 'City Beautiful' and 'where life is worth living'\" wrote historian and Afro-American reporter Fred Hart Williams in his unpublished memoirs on Detroit, \"Harry P. Guy was one of Detroit's unique and unusually gifted musicians. Guy's extreme modesty, his obvious efforts at self-effacement withheld from him the fame and wealth which should rightfully have been his. His superb arrangements of music compositions, his ability to infuse them with the magic of his inborn melody and harmony of tone, quite often were the measure of success of an otherwise mediocre composition. He was equally at home with arrangements of serious dimensions and with so-called popular forms of musical output. Harry P. Guy was the soul of music. Money seemingly mattered little. It was nothing unusual for him to neglect to place his name on manuscripts as the arranger. In scores of musical successes carried only the name of the composer and lyricist.\"
