Come complicate your ideas about gender in a supportive, nonjudgmental atmosphere. In this course we read work by trans and gender-expansive writers, exploring different ways gender can come onto the page. This class welcomes people of all genders who are interested to see how feelings and experiences around gender, or gender transformation, become poems and prose. Especially welcome are people who may have not yet read much trans or genderqueer writing or who are on the beginning of a gender journey, whether your own, your child’s, or that of another close person.
The writers we read become our teachers, helping us think about: coming out, ideas we grew up with around gender, blowing up the limits of our perception, and pressures and responsibilities (such as privacy) we may feel when writing about ourselves or loved ones. Our reading list includes Andrea Gibson, Torrey Peters, Isla Lichen, Sabrina Imbler, Ching-In Chen, TC Tolbert, and others.
There will be weekly writing prompts. This course is not a workshop, but there will be ample time to share from our writings.
