See our \"Contact Us\" page for location and parking information. For those of you out-of-town members, or if you are just not able to attend an in-person program, we will be using a hybrid approach this year. While the speaker is presenting their program to the in-person audience, we will also be broadcasting the program live over a Zoom webinar. All members will receive a link by email to join us over Zoom, if you are not able to attend in person. And, if you are busy on the night of the program, we will also be recording the program, and all members will receive a link by email after the program, to watch the recorded program within two weeks of receiving the link.

Our membership application can be downloaded from that page and membership is only $30 per calendar year, or the bargain price of $50 for two years, all for up to a two-person household.
Our in-person speaker programs are open to the public and admission is $5 per person; admission for members is free.

Please join the Willamette Valley Hardy Plant Group on Tuesday, 14 April 2026 at 7:00 PM in the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1685 W 13th Ave, Eugene OR where we will welcome Whitey Lueck, teacher, horticulturist, ecologist, naturalist, landscape designer, and writer. He will present “Horticulture - Then and Now.\"
A lot has changed since Whitey Lueck in 1974 received the L. C. Chadwick Award from the American Society for Horticultural Science as the outstanding horticulture student in the United States. Along the way, Whitey’s “gardening” philosophy changed from a human-oriented approach—where the focus is almost exclusively on visual beauty—to a much broader nature-based approach where visual beauty and ecological function are of equal value.
In this presentation, Whitey will briefly review his own horticultural background—with fun photos from the family archives—before focusing on the nature-friendly approaches to contemporary horticulture he saw when he returned to visit places where he’d lived and worked many years before.
Doors on the east side of the building open at 6:30 PM for botanical sample browsing, refreshments and socializing. The program begins at 7:00 PM. Admission is free for members and $5 for non-members.
Membership in the Hardy Plant Group is open to all and is $30 annually. There is ample parking in the parking lot which can be accessed from both Chambers St. or W 13th Ave, with additional parking in the adjacent Looking Glass Center parking lot to the north, but please do not park under their covered entry way. Overflow parking is also available in the first 20 spaces on the east and south side of Redeemer Fellowship Church just across Chambers St. to the west.

(He was also employed at one time as a “male cocktail waitress” at the Oregon Moose Lodge in Corvallis.) Before his retirement in 2023, he taught in the School of Architecture and Environment at the University of Oregon.
Whitey is the author of nine engaging essay collections, including:

Whitey lives not far from the University of Oregon campus on a very nature-friendly property that includes an intentionally planted front woodland instead of a front lawn. His property is open to the public and showcases—in addition to his novel approach to landscape design and care—a household that produces most of its own fruits and vegetables (as well as eggs and honey), makes its own electricity (from rooftop solar panels), and has no driveway (because Whitey has never owned a car).
