I had always loved music, and I guess my mother decided it was time I put that love to good use. The date was 1969. We had just moved to the little town of Halsey, Oregon, and I was entering the fifth grade.

The piano teacher my mother found was a woman similar in stature to my own grandmother and about the same age. I loved \"old\" people. They had such interesting stories about their lives to tell. My piano teacher, Mrs. Leona Chatham, was no different.

One day, while she was teaching me a piece by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, she began telling me about him.

\"You never shook hands with him.

You only shook the very ends of his fingers.

He had long, cold fingers too.

His hands were how he made his living, and he couldn't have a

big bear of a handshake squeeze them so hard that he couldn't play!\"

Then she told me something I have never forgotten.

She had auditioned for him when she was thirteen years old. He was looking for a prodigy to further train and introduce to the world of music.

(I loved to watch her play because it looked like her fingers never touched the keys, whether the music was loud or soft, or whether she was playing at one end of the keyboard or the other.)

She was chosen.

When she told her father, he said, \"You walk out that door and it is closing behind you. It will never open again.\"

Gasp! At thirteen years of age, I would have been devastated.

She stayed because she loved her family, and her father never told her why she couldn't go. Even years later, you could tell it still puzzled her. How sad to have a dream that remained unfulfilled.

In the introduction to the piece I was playing there was a paragraph at the top of the page about Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky coming to Carnegie Hall for its opening in 1891. I remember thinking, That had to be pretty spectacular. At that moment I decided that someday I would play at Carnegie Hall and perform one of my teacher's songs in her honor.

Nearly fifty-four years later, I was in New York City for a three-day book launch on the JumboTron. One evening the ladies and I were walking back to the hotel after shopping at Tiffany's and sightseeing when suddenly I saw the words Carnegie Hall right in front of me. They took my picture as I pretended to play an invisible piano, and I said, \"I always wanted to play here.\"

\"Why haven't you?\" they asked.

I had no answer.

That night, as I prepared for sleep, I heard something from deep within my memories, almost as though someone had spoken it out loud.

\"That is for other people... not us.\"

\"That is for other people... not you.\"

Why not me?

No one—not even I—ever imagined I would travel alone to New York City for a book launch, let alone become a bestselling author of eight books at the time. Yet there I was. So, why not me?

It was at that moment I realized why I had never flown on the Concorde, never traveled with Pan Am, or pursued so many of the dreams I once had.

It wasn't opportunity that held me back.

It was one simple belief.

\"That's for other people... not you.\"

I decided that belief would end.

When I returned home, I contacted Carnegie Hall to learn what it would take to perform there.

Then I realized something.

This was never meant to be about me.

It was about honoring the woman who first inspired my love of music and creating an opportunity for other musicians to experience what so many only dream about.

What began as a promise I quietly made to myself in a piano lesson more than fifty years ago has become \"Music Ignites Life\"—a Carnegie Hall experience celebrating music, honoring a remarkable teacher, and inviting others to stand on one of the world's most iconic stages.

One side note.

One of my students, who was far more advanced than I was, said something to me that made teaching all worthwhile.

When she first came to me, I had her play, and afterward I told both her and her mother that I didn't know if I could teach her anything. She was so much further advanced than what I normally taught because I only taught beginning piano.

Her mother said there was no one else they could find.

So I agreed to do what I could.

Each week she would play, and she pounded on the keys as though it were a battle and she was determined to make them do what she wanted. We talked about letting the piano make the music, not us, and worked on timing, expression, and a few other things. Mostly, though, every week she simply played beautiful music for me.

Christmas came soon, and she brought me a little gift—a wooden teddy bear sitting on a glass mirror.

Then she said something that touched my heart.

\"You made me love playing the piano.\"

For her, playing had been a duty. She knew she was talented—very talented. What she had never learned was to respect the piano, to let its music fill her as she played, and to experience it so deeply that others could experience it too.

As I write this, I realize Mrs. Chatham's gift never ended with her. It simply continued through me.
