before God, but the doers of the Law will be declared righteous:\"<br></div><div><br></div><div>The<strong> Literal Standard Version</strong> was published in 2020 by the Covenant Press<sup>1</sup>, and is an update of Robert Young's 1862 version <em>Young's Literal Translation</em>.<sup>2&nbsp;</sup>Similar in scope to the Refreshed American Standard Version {RASV}, it appears to modernize an older translation, here the YLT, replacing&nbsp;<em>hath&nbsp;</em>with&nbsp;<em>has, Thy</em>&nbsp; with Your, <em>saith</em> with <em>says</em>&nbsp;and the like.<em>&nbsp;</em>Words that have passed out of everyday English are replaced, such as replacing 'refractory' with&nbsp;'stubborn' [Ps 68.6]. There are a number of print options as well as digital options offered by the Publishers. <br></div><div><br></div><div>Our print copy is ©2020, presented in two unattractive columns of text per verso &amp; recto, without footnotes or running paragraph headers. Regarding paragraphs, there are none per se; each Bible book is presented in one continuous stream of two column pages. We can go along with that choice, barren as it appears, but Psalms and other Poetic parts of the OT are presented in the same unattractive unbroken pages of text, with only chapter numbers interrupting the flow of text.&nbsp; The preface to our 2020 edition puts this forward as a valuable 'feature' of the LSV, in imitation of the original manuscripts which of course are without paragraphs.&nbsp; However, the original manuscripts also lack chapters and verses.&nbsp;For that matter, early versions of the NT books lack a title.&nbsp; So when it comes to this 'feature' of the LSV we have a big frown. Reading the LSV is painful in our experience. We much prefer pagination with paragraphs and text formatted as poetry when appropriate.&nbsp;<br></div><div><br></div><div>Young's version was revised by him in 1887, and ten years after his death in 1888, a further revision was released. The 1897 version translates the Tetragrammaton 6831 times, consistently rendering it 'Jehovah.' <br></div><div><strong></strong><br></div><div><strong>However,</strong>&nbsp;the LSV also renders the Divine Name but <strong>uses the transliterated YHWH</strong>,<sup>3</sup> again some 6831 times in 5788 verses.&nbsp;For this the LSV has the <strong><span class=\"theme-text-color-4-2\">ATB+M</span> <em>conditional&nbsp;</em></strong>stamp of approval. Using the TR as the NT basic manuscript is a doctrinal decision, not a translation choice as such.&nbsp; And it's baffling if one wants to live up to the claim of producing a worthwhile translation.&nbsp;The LSV also makes the completely silly claim of being a word-for-word translation. As we have stated repeatedly in this site, it is not possible to produce a word-for-word translation between two languages.&nbsp; A case in point: English mostly doesn't use cases. Greek has at least four&nbsp;cases. Another instance: Greek has four words for love: Agape, Storge, Phileo&nbsp;and Eros.&nbsp; English has: one, yes&nbsp;<strong>one.&nbsp;</strong><br></div><div><br></div><div>Young's translation was peculiar in its treatment of Hebrew and Greek tenses. As noted in Wikipedia [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Young%27s_Literal_Translation]: \"Young used the present tense in many places in which other translations use the past tense, particularly in narratives.\" [retrieved 12-23-2020]. Tenses are also manipulated in the LSV. Consider Gen 1.9:<br></div><div><br></div><div>ESV:&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.<br></div><div>HCSB:&nbsp; &nbsp; Then God said, \"Let the water under the sky be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear.\" And it was so.&nbsp;<br></div><div>NIV:&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; And God said, \"Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.\" And it was so.<br></div><div>NJB:&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;God said, 'Let the waters under heaven come together into a single mass, and let dry land appear.' And so it was.<br></div><div>NWTSY:&nbsp;Then God said: “Let the waters under the heavens be collected together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.<br></div><div>NASB:&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Then God said, \"Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear\"; and it was so.&nbsp;<br></div><div>NET:&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;God said, \"Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place and let dry ground appear.\" It was so.<br></div><div>ASV:&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.<br></div><div>NLT:&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Then God said, “Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear.” And that is what happened</div><div>CLV:&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;And saying is the Elohim, \"Flow together shall the water from under the heavens to one place, and appear shall the dry land.\" And coming is it to be so.</div><div>LSV:&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;And God says, “Let the waters under the heavens be collected to one place, and let the dry land be seen”: and it is so.</div><div><br></div><div>The LSV sees some virtue in 'preserving' the tense of the original Hebrew or Greek. However, a translation is just that - not a recreation of the original language with its quirks, but a rendering in the target language of the original.&nbsp; A fair question we feel is: What is gained by rendering Gen 1.9 in the present tense? Does anyone think that this act of creation is happening now? So again, how are we better for preserving the tense? We can see no benefit other than the assumed 'it's better because that's how the original was written.' An in depth discussion of Hebrew tenses is beyond the scope of this website, but briefly: Biblical Hebrew has two: the perfect and the imperfect.&nbsp; Perfect indicates a completed action, and imperfect, an ongoing of incomplete action.&nbsp;&nbsp;Just to make it more interesting, an action that took place in the past can&nbsp;be indicated by verbs in the imperfect state if the action is seen viewed as incomplete.&nbsp; The corollary is also true - action that is to take place in future can be indicated by a verb in the perfect tense if the action is seen as complete.&nbsp; This is why literal, word for word translations are wonderful in theory but not really practical.&nbsp; Different languages have different ways of communicating, and while it's lovely to know how the original was written, more important is the rendering in the target language.&nbsp; Does the rendering convey the sense of the original? Is it 'acceptable' or normal English, or French, or German?&nbsp; The key to good translation is to convey the sense of the original without distortion and in the best possible way.&nbsp; Re-read the renderings of Gen 1.9 again please.&nbsp; Is the LSV's 'and it is so' better than 'and it was so' or 'that is what happened?' It is clear that the action is over, complete, in the past.&nbsp; Using the present tense&nbsp;<em>in English</em>&nbsp;obscures the meaning in our opinion, at the worst; at the best, it is bad English and nonsensical. It <em><strong>is</strong></em> so? No, it <em><strong>was</strong></em> so.<br></div><div><br></div><div>To be fair, we show a similar reading by the CLV, and it fares no better.&nbsp; See the <u><a href=\"https://editor.sitebuilder.com/page-50-concordant-literal-version\" data-attached-link=\"{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;Pages&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;id1553701913012&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;Page 50 - Concordant Literal Version&quot;}\" class=\"wz-link internal-link\">CLV review page</a></u> for a discussion of that translation. If you re-read the CLV entry above, note the tortured English rendering; it might be Yoda doing the translation with the verb-subject order reversal and the use of the present tense for an action completed in the past.&nbsp; Odd, unusual for no apparent gain to our view.&nbsp;&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Returning to the LSV: Regarding this newer translation: Its use of the Divine Name is laudable, and we accord it our approval.&nbsp; Of note is the statement on page 6 of the Preface: \"<em>All uppercase L<span style=\"font-size:12px;\">ORD</span> is used in the New Testament when a reference to Y<span style=\"font-size:12px;\">HWH </span>is likely.</em>\" Hebrew translations of the NT typically have 'the angel of Jehovah' in Mt 1.20, rather than 'angel of the LORD.'&nbsp; And the LSV has 'messenger of the L<span style=\"font-size:12px;\">ORD'</span> at Mt 1.20. A search [via e-Sword] for L<span style=\"font-size:12px;\">ORD</span> in the LSV reveals 406 matches in 374 verses. It is interesting to note that even the NWTSY, first and most well known for its use of Jehovah in the NT, has only 237 occurrences.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>As a translation, however, it is a disappointment and of minor interest; we will be following its further development and usage.&nbsp; Various editions are planned, such as better binding and the like.&nbsp; The copy we have is very bare bones, printed on lesser quality paper. One feature that is trumpeted is the use of a&nbsp;<em>caesura&nbsp;</em>mark - || - to denote poetry [known also as <em>pipes</em>]. Our reaction is mostly a yawn. To be sure, It <strong>is a bit&nbsp;</strong>more pleasing to the eye when poetry is typeset as poetry. The Psalms however are set as blocks of text, yes with many || to identify them, as if the reader doesn't know that the Psalms are poems/lyrics. The rigid insistence on blocks of text is said to stem from a desire to imitate the famous Uncial manuscripts - Codex Sinaiticus, Alexandrinus, Vatican 1209 and the Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus. Interesting but really? Writing in a truly primitive time for written materials, with huge reproduction difficulties and costs, the practice and format of such manuscripts undoubtedly worked best for copyists. This however is a much different time, especially when we consider that there are millions of Bibles <i>printed</i>&nbsp;each year.&nbsp; Paper is not prohibitively expensive, nor are good quality binding materials such as top-grain leather or bonded leather, buckram and even pleather. Thus we question the choice to present the main text in two block columns of ugly text. Novel but not adding any value we can see to the translation.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>One big fail of the LSV is that it retains the sixteen NT verses universally acknowledged to be missing from the oldest manuscripts; <u><a href=\"https://editor.sitebuilder.com/page-184-missing-verses\" data-attached-link=\"{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;Pages&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;id1764797184545&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;Page 184 Missing Verses&quot;}\" class=\"wz-link internal-link\">see this page for more on these 'missing' verses</a></u>. This appears to be because the translators used the TR as the basis for the NT, which is silly. The preface page 5 states that the LSV is 'based upon the most prolific texts.'&nbsp; We see that as nonsense; why would the work not be based on the best manuscripts, not the 'most prolific?'&nbsp; &nbsp;Whatever is meant by 'prolific texts.'</div><div><br></div><div>Other comparison verses:</div><div><strong>Act 20:28:&nbsp;</strong> <em>Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit made you overseers, to feed the Assembly of God that He acquired through His own blood,&nbsp;</em><br></div><ul><li>'Assembly' here is an acceptable rendering of the Greek&nbsp;<em>ecclesia,&nbsp;</em>&nbsp;which in the 1st century&nbsp;<strong>never</strong>&nbsp;meant a building but rather the people, the congregation assembled. Much better than the more common church, which we find foolish.</li></ul><div><strong>Rom 10.9,10</strong>:&nbsp;<em>that if you may <strong>confess</strong> with your mouth that Jesus is LORD, and may believe in your heart that God raised Him out of the dead, you will be saved,&nbsp;10&nbsp; for with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth is <strong>confession</strong> made to salvation;&nbsp;</em></div><ul><li>Confession here is a fail for the LSV.&nbsp; Too churchy, with connotations of the confessional and a priest on the other side of the cloth window. The Greek here is&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span class=\"theme-text-color-2-2\">ὁμολογέω</span></span> <em>homologeō</em></li><li>The NWTSY study note on verse 9 reads:&nbsp;<em>publicly&nbsp;declare:&nbsp;The&nbsp;Greek&nbsp;word&nbsp;ho·mo·lo·geʹo&nbsp;is&nbsp;rendered&nbsp; “confess”&nbsp;in&nbsp;some&nbsp; Bibles.&nbsp; Many&nbsp;lexicons&nbsp;define&nbsp;this&nbsp;word&nbsp;“<strong>to&nbsp;declare&nbsp;(acknowledge)&nbsp;publicly</strong>.”&nbsp;In&nbsp;verse&nbsp;10,&nbsp;the&nbsp;same&nbsp;verb&nbsp;is&nbsp;translated&nbsp;“<strong>makes&nbsp;public&nbsp;declaration</strong>.”&nbsp;Paul&nbsp;explains&nbsp;that&nbsp;it&nbsp;is&nbsp;not&nbsp;enough&nbsp;for&nbsp;Christians&nbsp;to&nbsp;have&nbsp;faith&nbsp;in&nbsp;their&nbsp;heart;&nbsp;they&nbsp;must&nbsp;make&nbsp;a&nbsp;public&nbsp;declaration&nbsp;of&nbsp;that&nbsp;faith&nbsp;in&nbsp;order&nbsp;to&nbsp;gain&nbsp;salvation.&nbsp;(Ps&nbsp;40:9,&nbsp;10;&nbsp;96:2,&nbsp;3,&nbsp;10;&nbsp;150:6;&nbsp;Ro&nbsp;15:9)&nbsp;They&nbsp;do&nbsp;not&nbsp;make&nbsp;such&nbsp;a&nbsp;public&nbsp;declaration&nbsp;just&nbsp;once,&nbsp;as&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;time&nbsp;of&nbsp;their&nbsp;baptism,&nbsp;but&nbsp;they&nbsp;continue&nbsp;to&nbsp;do&nbsp;so&nbsp;when&nbsp;meeting&nbsp;together&nbsp;with&nbsp;fellow&nbsp;believers&nbsp;and&nbsp;when&nbsp;proclaiming&nbsp;the&nbsp;good&nbsp;news&nbsp;about&nbsp;salvation&nbsp;to&nbsp;unbelievers.​—Heb&nbsp;10:23-25;&nbsp;13:15 {formatting added}&nbsp; </em>Here the point is that Paul refers to the declaration of one's faith, not the request to another human for forgiveness of sins. <strong>Confess is a poor rendering</strong></li></ul><div><strong>​Joh 1:16:&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong><em>And we all received out of His fullness, and <strong>grace for grace</strong></em><strong>;</strong>&nbsp;<br></div><ul><li class=\"theme-text-color-4-2\"><span class=\"theme-text-color-2-4\">What exactly is meant by 'grace' here?
