In the first instance the article is used and this makes the reference specific. In the second instance there is no article and it is difficult to believe that the omission is not significant. In effect it gives an adjectival quality to the second use of Theos (God) so that the phrase means 'The Word was divine.' The explanatory information found in the Glossary attempts to explain away why servant was chosen and half-heartedly looks to pass this off due to contemporary values re: slavery. The best word for the Greek is the one that should appear; yes slavery is now looked down on with disgust but slave is the better word here, without doubt. The sum of why they don't use slave is, in the end, whinging. Paul's point was that after the resurrected Jesus appeared to him he willingly enslaved himself to the service of his God. In Acts 27.23 he stated: \"Last night an *angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship stood by me.\" A servant, in today's usage and for many years prior, does not belong to his employer; he has the freedom to leave his employer. Paul did not see his relationship to his God as one that was in any fashion subject to his leaving.

Acts 20.28: 'Take heed for yourselves and for all the flock among whom the Holy Spirit has anointed you as Ϯguardians: be as shepherds to the *church of God which he won for himself by the *death of his own Son.'

In the Transactional Notes for guardians, one is referred to the 'Glossary, Bishop.' That explanation is about their use of guardian here for Greek word episkopos. Bishop is not commonly used for the Greek; the AMP, ASV, 1535 Coverdale, 1582 Douay and a few minor translations do use Bishop. It's odd that the TNT calls attention to 'Bishop' with this reference.

WRT 'death,' the Glossary entry on death points one to Blood. That reads: 'The word rendered in the TNT as 'death' is the Greek for blood.' The Glossary goes on to explain [under Blood #2]: The 'blood of Christ' represents the 'death' of Christ and is frequently translated in this way.' Why the wrong word is used to translate the Greek for blood is not given. This means that the TNT veers into exegesis rather than sticking with translation. This is a serious failing of the translation. Why not use the actual English for the Greek in the main text and then footnote or use the Glossary or Transactional Notes to explain why 'blood' should be understood? The translators of the TNT have this the wrong-way around in our opinion. This is one of the reasons we do not recommend this work.

'Church' presents another curious choice by this work. The Glossary entry states: 'Church' in the NT never means 'building'. It always represents either a group of committed Christians in any given locality met to practise their religion, or he totality of these groups scattered throughout the world.' So why then render the word with 'church?' Which means the bricks and mortar to most readers? This is another misguided choice.

John 8.58: 'Jesus said to them, 'In very truth I tell you, before Abraham was born, the Ϯ\"I am\" existed, and I am he.''

The Translational Notes refer to John 6.20 and there they state: 'It is I: This statement means exactly what it says, but it may mean much more.' {We find that silly nonsense; when would a Biblical statement not mean what it says? And what basis is there for saying it may mean more, other than a panting desperation to retrofit the doctrine of the trinity? If, IF, it may mean much more, then it may not mean much more, no?} It goes on: 'The Greek is literally 'I AM', the title by which God revealed himself in Ex 3.14.' The statement by Jehovah in Ex 3.14 is forced by Trinitarians at times to be a title, but it is not in our opinion. This is painful English to boot. And the rendering of 'the \"I AM\" existed' is unique to the TNT as far as we can determine. A big fail here.

Rev 19.1: After this I heard what sounded like the great shout of a vast crowd in heaven, saying ϮHallelujah! Salvation, *glory and power belong to our God

The Transactional Notes on Hallelujah read: 'A Hebrew word meaning 'Praise God', often spelt in the Latin form 'Alleluia.' Our tolerance for nonsense is quite limited. Hallelujah is a transliteration from Hebrew but it does not mean 'Praise God.' It means 'Praise (you) Jah' where the you is understood to be plural. Jah is a shortened version of Jehovah [or Yah for Yahweh, either is equally acceptable]. It is distressing to our staff to see the Divine Name disrespected in this manner. Certainly the authors of these Transactional Notes entry know better; if they do not, more's the pity. The word is 'Hallelujah' not 'Hallelugod.'

1 John 5.18: We know that no child of God goes on sinning, but the Son of God keeps him, and the *evil one does not get hold of him.

As discussed in this page, the rendering of 'sinning' is preferred to other translations that render this 'does not sin' which of course is incorrect; all humans sin. Again the present tense in Greek indicates a continuous action; other better versions of this verse have 'does not keep on sinning' or 'does not continue to sin' or 'does not make a practice of sin.' All of these capture the sense of the Greek, whlich is obscured here by how the TNT renders the verse.

1 Sakae Kubo, Andrews University, makes this comment: The United Bible Societies (UBS) published their Greek Text in 1966 with translators primarily in view, especially in the format of the apparatus. The Translator's New Testament, based on this text, has the same objective, but is for those translators who must depend on English for access into the text of the NT. To fulfill this purpose the translation must be in a universal English familiar to those who translate into languages which have no translation or only poor ones.

Source: https://digitalcom- mons.andrews.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1334&context=auss, retrieved 3-3-2026. Our understanding of this quote and other comments on the Translator's New Testament is that it is intended for a translation from English directly to another language. Obviously the best way for all translations is to translate directly from the original Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic to the target language. In this day and age, price could scarcely be what stands in the way of a translator going back to the Original Greek for example; a copy of the latest UBS edition runs from $65 to $100. A copy of the Masoretic text is similarly not prohibitively expensive. About the only reason we can fathom for following this path is that the translator's lack a knowledge of Hebrew and Greek. We know of no translation that followed this path, that is, using the Translator's NT in English as the source text. And another problem with such a translation path is that this work is only the NT - there's no OT
