He and Richard Lattimore are two distinguished poets with well-regarded translations of the NT; Lattimore opined that a \"translator must be a poet.\" <sup>1</sup>​​,<sup>4&nbsp; &nbsp;</sup>Barnstone's dedication page states 'for William Tyndale, Richard Lattimore, Robert Alter for pioneer models of biblical translation.' ​​<br></span></div><div><span style=\"font-family:oxygen;\"><br><strong><em>The New Covenant</em>,</strong> released in 2002,&nbsp; contains the four gospels and Revelation.&nbsp; Parts were released prior to 2002 in various journals, poetic and otherwise.&nbsp; Barnstone then released&nbsp;<strong><em>The Restored New Testament</em></strong> in 2009,&nbsp;which includes all of the accepted NT canon plus several gnostic gospels such as the Gospel of Thomas.&nbsp; [n.b.: <em>The Gospel of Thomas is </em>rubbish<em>, pure and simple. It does not rise to the level of 'gospel' in our view</em>].&nbsp; The Restored New Testament is anything but the traditional translation of the NT; it is different and better than most.&nbsp; Barnstone disdains the traditional Gospel order of Mathew, Mark, Luke and John; they are known as Markos, Mattityahu, Loukas, and Yohanon, and appear in that order, then the gnostic 'gospels,' followed by Romans.&nbsp; He based his translation on the fourth edition of <strong><em>The Greek New Testament ,&nbsp;</em></strong>1993, published by the United Bible Societies,&nbsp;&nbsp;and&nbsp;the 26th edition of <strong><em>Novum Testamentum Graece,</em> </strong>by Eberhard and Erwin Nestle.&nbsp; Barnstone does follow the <em>Textus Receptus</em>&nbsp;in some passages.<br></span></div><div><span style=\"font-family:oxygen;\">​<br></span></div><div><span style=\"font-family:oxygen;\">For the reasons stated below, <strong><span class=\"theme-text-color-2-2\"><em>The Restored New Testament </em></span></strong><span class=\"theme-text-color-2-4\">and</span><strong><span class=\"theme-text-color-2-2\"> <em>The New Covenant</em></span>&nbsp; </strong>both&nbsp;<strong></strong>have the<span class=\"theme-text-color-4-2\"><strong> ATB+M</strong></span> stamp of approval.<br></span></div><div><span style=\"font-family:oxygen;\"><br>In the part of his foreword&nbsp;titled 'A New Translation,' page 10, he states: \"First, I wish to restore the probable Hebrew and Aramaic names and so frame the Jewish identity of the&nbsp; main figures of the covenant, including that of Yeshua (Jesus), his family, and followers.\" To that end,&nbsp;Mark&nbsp;1.1 reads:<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;\"In the beginning of the gospel of Yeshua the mashiah, son of God.<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; 2 As it is written Yeshayah the prophet:<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Look, I send my messenger ahead of you,&nbsp;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;and he will prepare your road;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; the voice of one crying out in the desert:<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Prepare the way of Adonai<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;and make his paths straight.<br>This is typical of his stated goal of restoring the original language names; Yeshayah is more familiar to English speakers as Isaiah; Yeshua is short for Yehohsua&nbsp;as he notes in footnote 2.&nbsp; Thayer's Greek Definitions for Jesus states:&nbsp; \"<u><em><strong><span style=\"color:#0b68a9;\">Ἰησοῦς</span></strong>&nbsp; Iēsous&nbsp; Thayer Definition: Jesus = “Jehovah is salvation.</em></u>”&nbsp; Note that Yeshayah / Isaiah is defined by&nbsp;Stong's as:&nbsp;<em>Jah has saved; Salvation of Jehovah</em>], and \"Adonai' translates the Greek<em> kyrios</em>. There are extensive footnotes throughout, many dealing with the derivation of proper names from Hebrew to Greek to English. Please note that Barnstone's using the anglicized Hebrew names of Yeshua/Yehoshua and Yeshayah highlight these Theophoric names-Yeshua again is 'Jehovah is Salvation' and Yeshayah means Jah or Yah has saved.&nbsp;<br></span></div><div><span style=\"font-family:oxygen;\"><br></span></div><div><span style=\"font-family:oxygen;\">The footnote for Mark 1.14&nbsp;states: \"\"God\" in the New Testament may be more properly translated&nbsp;<em>El, Eloah, Elohim&nbsp;</em>(plural or plural of majesty of El) or&nbsp;<strong><em>Yahweh</em>&nbsp;or \"YHWH\"</strong> (which is closest to the un-voweled Hebrew consonants), or \"Adonai.\"\"&nbsp; Later in the footnote, Barnstone&nbsp;makes this point regarding Matt 27.46: \"So in Matthew 27.46 in recent translations from the Hebrew Bible, as in Everett Fox's&nbsp;<em>The Five Books of Moses&nbsp;</em>(New York: Schocken Books, 1995) and now elsewhere, <strong>\"God\" is translated YHWH.\"</strong>&nbsp;[bolding added].&nbsp;<br></span></div><div><span style=\"font-family:oxygen;\"><br></span></div><div><span style=\"font-family:oxygen;\">At Mattityahu [<strong>Matthew] 1.20</strong>, footnote 42 states:<em> \"Angel of the Lord from the Greek&nbsp;<span style=\"color:#0883d8;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">ἄγγελος κυρίου</span></span>&nbsp;(angelos kyriou), from the&nbsp;Hebrew&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; <span style=\"color:#138bde;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">המלאך&nbsp;יהוה</span></span>&nbsp;(malakh yahweh), as in Genesis 48.16. A literal rendering would be Yahweh's malakh or \"messenger.\"</em> It is noteworthy that in many Hebrew translations of this verse, it is the first occurrence of the Tetragrammaton [Hutter, 1599; Robertson, 1661; Thomas Fry, 1815, Salkinson, 1886;&nbsp;Delitzsch, 1887, others] in the main text of the Hebrew translation.&nbsp;The Israeli Authorized Version renders the Tetragrammaton consistently in the OT and NT as YY, some 6417 times, including more than 300 in the NT.
