Honoring the 2025 Norman G. Orodenker Peacemaker

Background: Norman Orodenker was a fighter for the freedom of all people. He devoted himself to the principles of promoting an inter-connection to all people regardless of faith, color, nationality, or gender. As chair, president, and member of a number of social reform and justice organizations, Mr. Orodenker fought for the freedom and liberty of everyone while also being a champion against homelessness and poverty. His principle of using non-violence and educating the public of the plight of the poor and unfortunate helped to bring about positive social changes throughout the community that resonate long after his passing. A civil rights advocate and leader, Norman was the state’s First Commissioner of the Rhode Island Commission on Prejudice & Bias. Through his leadership, guidance and dedication, the Commission introduced anti-discrimination law enforcement training, worked with the Attorney’s General office, supported legislation to protect the rights of people, and has been a voice against any form of prejudice and bias in the state. Norm was the first recipient of the commission's Peacemaker Award in 2017, and in 2025 it was renamed in his memory.
Statement of Purpose: As the Commission on Prejudice and Bias continues to carry forward and expand the legacy of our first chair, we seek to uplift and celebrate Rhode Islanders who are outstanding in their commitment to combating prejudice and violence in every form. This award provides our commission and the communities we serve with the opportunity to reflect upon and appreciate the hard work so generously undertaken for the sake of bringing to fruition the prophetic vision of a state where all can dwell under their own vine and fig tree with none to make them afraid. This award shall provide stimulation and encouragement to emerging and established leaders in the community through formal recognition of their contributions to Rhode Island and all her inhabitants.
Criteria: The award may be given to any member of the community who has:
• Fulfilled significant leadership role(s) in the Commission on Prejudice and Bias, or its partner agencies/organizations, in other local community service groups, or in national justice-forward agencies and organizations, and
• Assumed and creditably discharged significant leadership role(s) in non-profit organizations within the Rhode Island general community and furthered the Commission’s mission to understand and combat prejudice and hate in all forms throughout Rhode Island and beyond.
Guidelines for Selection of Nominees:
• There is no limitation on age.
• The award need not be given annually but rather is to be bestowed only when a worthy candidate is submitted for consideration.
• The award may be given for past service, not necessarily for contemporary service, but will not be given posthumously.
• Names of candidates, together with supporting data, may be submitted in reasonable time by any Rhode Islander to the Commission on Prejudice and Bias.
• If not chosen for the award, nominations from the prior three years will be carried forward to increase the number of people under consideration for the award.
Procedures:
• Nominees for the Award shall be solicited from the community in the spring of each year. A notice of applications will be shared through the Commission’s various communications channels.
• The chair shall convene a committee to review nominations and present worthy candidates to the full commission for selection.
• The committee shall include at least one past chair or vice chair of the Commission and if possible, a member of the Rhode Island legislature, State Attorney General’s office, Law enforcement, and a community representative appointed to the commission. Other committee members may include current or former commissioners and/or other volunteers selected by the current chair of the Commission.
• No candidates for the award or any member of the family of the candidates shall participate in the discussion or selection of the award recipient.
• Award recipients shall be selected and announced before the Commission’s final meeting of a given year’s legislative session and honored at a meeting before the start of the session of the following year or on an occasion when other major awards are presented.
The honor does not include a financial honorarium, but an appropriate recognition befitting the importance of this award shall be provided to the recipient.
